Anybody know of some good sites for freelance political writers?  I can't find anything that's specifically for students, and I'm looking into it for some extra money.

There aren't any because nobody wants to pay for that. There are ways to make money online writing (Adam knows about this, although I don't), but not writing about the things you want to write. Otherwise, if you want money, you need to get a real job.

Apply for an internship instead.

you'd honestly have more chance making money on Youtube "reacting" to stuff.

Oldiesfreak isn't an attractive female who would post such things in her underwear, and YouTube changed the algorithm to kill those a couple years ago anyway.

The best opportunity is to apply to intern on the staff of a legislative caucus or intern with a congressional campaign. If you express interest you may get chances to write political pieces like talking points and press releases and if the writing is good enough you might be paid full time to work on the communications staff.

The other direction is to start on a career in journalism. Many political writers begin that way then specialize in political writing.

Can confirm: as someone who writes anywhere from 10,000-25,000 words per week like clockwork, there is no money to be made in writing political pieces as a freelance writer. It might be different if you were already well-known, but that's an entirely different concept.

Because it's a subject that is almost exclusively fueled by either mainstream journalism or outright passion, nobody is willing to buy content for it. The main reason people buy content is to monetize it. It's quite difficult to monetize political content when compared to most niches, and again, most blogs or websites that are big enough to monetize the content have no trouble at all finding people who are willing to write for them for free (passion, cathartic, to get a name for themselves, etc).

In 4 years' time, I've had all of maybe 5 pieces with a political angle (though that hasn't stopped me from injecting bits and pieces of political commentary into some of the other content I've written). The last one was some 30,000-foot analysis of medical malpractice and tort reform claims by Republicans that was published somewhere on Daily Kos of all places, LOL.

Not specifically political, but Upwork is a great site for freelance writers. You should check it out.
