This is a serious question. I've heard Bill Maher, who is himself openly atheist, claim, on an episode of The Daily Show, that President Obama is really an atheist and that he attended Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church for political reasons.

Now that might explain why he doesn't get worked up over people accusing him of being a "secret Muslim".

Of course, a politician's religious beliefs aren't an issue unless they get in the way of policy making and their work.

I think Bill is a bit too desperate here to claim Obama as one of his own. If I personally had to guess, I would say Obama is probably a mostly culturally Christian "somethingist".

I think that like a large number of Americans, he belongs in the "I occasionally go to church and believe that there is some God, but I'm not very sure of anything and I'm not concerned with religion" crowd.

No, he seems to be agnostic or only mildly spiritual. Probably not devout at all, though.

I like to think he's in the "who gives a sh[Inks], but I'm a politician so let's play pretend" group.

Agnostic. Only goes to church to keep up his image and because "that's what good parents do."

I don't think Bill Maher has the inside track on Obama's religious life.

He's a Christian, but doesn't check on religion. He's playing with fire tomorrow by attending that Baltimore mosque, though.

I kinda think that at the most extreme, he's an agnostic. But more likely, he just doesn't really care either way and only goes to church because he's an American politician

I think he is secretly agnostic or atheist, but I don't care or know. He just strikes me as a natural skeptic.

I don't think he's suited to be a missionary or anything, and I don't think he's all that devout given his extremely pro-choice nature, but at a basic level, yes, he is a Christian.

He's Christian, just a more liberal one, and no longer feels the need to officially belong to a particular church. Like me.

But really, this is irrelevant.

Agreed.  I don't want to be the judge of Mr. Obama's salvation, so I'd just take him at his word and say he is a Christian.  Nonetheless, I am concerned with some of his policy stances on moral issues, such as his positions on abortion, gay marriage, and religious liberty.

Then you don't agree with me at all.  I said he's part of the "who gives a sh**t" crowd, or 'apatheist' as I sometimes like to describe us.  I'm not taking his word for it when he says he's a Christian.

He's probably nominally Christian in a European sense (in that 'meh') An increasing number of American's are but have to act up as Joe puts it for  the sake of politics.

I think he's a Christian in so far as he believes in 'something' and probably agrees with the Christian social-justice ethos. I don't think he thinks at all about 'salvation' or any of that bs.
