I recall we made a thread like this last time.

Here's the Iowa R caucus to start off:

Looks like the inclusion of Des Moines makes the 3rd stand out on maps of Republican nomination contests; likely the sort of rurals in the east of the state who are willing to attend a Republican caucus are not too different from those in the west (unlike the west/east pattern you would see in a general election).

Interesting that Cruz didn't even crack 30% in Steve King country. His support was a lot more geographically even than expected.

Cultural divisions in the state don't appear to follow CDs that much.

These may not be official/finalized, but the numbers are based on the map Dave has in the archive:

I didn't see that. Great work, Miles!
This is what I've done:

I have decided to not put the exact votes number because when I do the sum of the districts numbers it not corresponds with the state total, but it's really a small error (Cruz is off of 3 votes, Trump of 9, Rubio of 1, Carson of 2, Paul of 2, Kasich of 2, Santorum of 1, the others are exact) that doesn't change the winner and the order of candidates in each CD. If you want, I'll insert the votes number too. Smiley

Great work, Miles! It's a shame threads like these don't get more comments and encouragement.

It seems odd how little geographic variation the Republican race has from CD to CD within a given state.

Someone already commented on that for Iowa, but look at Oklahoma.  Cruz wins the state with 34%, and manages to get between 30 and 38% of the vote in all five districts.  A surprisingly large number of districts across the country in which no candidate breaks 40%.

Most of the state sites have precinct data available. There are a few states that still need to get with the program, though - Alabama for example being the least accessible.

I would assume OK is a bit of an outlier, but the Republican vote all over is generally more homogenous than the Dem vote.

How are you matching up the precincts with congressional districts?

Didn't Alabama actually go backward in this regard? They had the Clarity Elections system until 2012.

^ yeah, it was great when they had Clarity.

NC got rid if Clarity after 2012 too, but has a similar in-house system now.

I've been breaking down the CD results for statewide elections for a while, so I use my precinct assignments from that (and adjust for changed/new precincts).
