A poll was released by Rasmussen recently that stated that over 60% believe that the bible is literally true in the us.

If you were to have done that in the 1950s it would be very much higher.

One of the reasons why it has decreased is becasue of secularism. People dont attedn church anymore, people question religion more.

50 years ago we would never be able to talk about pornography. We would never see a man become a women. we would never have seen two gays getting married. Whatever your vies on it are, the secularists are winning the culture war.

Paganism is still found today. With its medical practices still used, its famous landmarks are all around us. Darwin is a thorn in religions side but while people become more accepting to human nature secularism increases.

When i die, i expect gays will be able to marry. I expect women will be able to clone thier own babies not in america maybe but people have become more acceptable to secualrism. so will christianity die?

What % of peoplem will believe that the bible is literally true in 2050? 40%
In europe its lower than that already.

I assume you mean modernize, and I agree. It will still be less prevelant, but if you look at many modern Christians, you'll see that their beliefs can be brought into relative harmony with science and whatnot(such as God having a hand in evolution, the world created in 6 days being a metaphor, things like that).

I agree with you John Dibble. I don't think Christianity will modernize itself in the sense that it will lose touch with it's core beliefs, but will accept that their was divine guidance in a lot of science and other things along that line.

No, though I do expect gene manipulation to result in another world war.

It would be irrational to assume that Christianity would be around forever but I do not believe that Christianity will be replaced by secularism. They is a certain element in human nature that makes us want to believe in something higher than ourselves. Even godless religions like Buddhism believe that a man can ascend to a higher plane of existance and that their is a higher spiritual force than man itself. Paganism lasted a long time and will Christianity but I wouldn't be suprised if 500-1500 years in the future a new religion would have transcended the Semitic religions in dominance.

Humanity has gotten more socially liberal over time.  The Western Europeans have already began to abandon Christianity.  That's maybe why so many christian books portray the anti-christ as from Europe as some leader of the EU or UN.  Quite possible, really.

It won't die off.  The majority of the world will abandon it, and then the unbelievers will be destroyed (thrown into a lake of fire).

That's not very nice of God.

Considering that 800 years ago Christianity though the Sun revolved around the Earth, no.

Wait, I thought this God fellow liked us? That seems rather strict. Why are we praying to him if He is bullying us into it?

God hits you because he loves you.  It hurts him more than it hurts you.  He's like that loveable abusive boyfriend, only all-powerful. Smiley

Eventually, Western civilization will lose its roots, become lucid and collapse, just like all other major civilizations.  The question is when, and will we be conqured or simply evolve.  The idea is truely scarey, as we don't tend to think about what that really means.  Western thought is drastically different from that of other civilization.  A violent collapse or take over could mean the end of Christ, Aristotle, Aquinas, Shakespeare, Socrates, Locke, and all other ideas that we tend not to realize are totally foriegn to people in other parts of the world.

Yes, I am a big fan of Huntington.

heh, I was just being facetious.  I dunno, I don't think saying that is an insult to God, considering I don't believe in Christianity's idea of God.

Seeing as how the religious Christians have always been around in this country, I don't think it'll be gone soon.  I guess it could be overtaken by another religion someday, probably not in my lifetime though, and that's saying a lot, I plan on living at least 450 years.

I don't think Christianity will collapse. I think it's actually getting stronger in America and other countries around the world. Religion as a whole is getting stronger too. The only place religion seems to be getting weaker is Europe and Japan.

I don't think Western civilization will ever "collapse" in the sense of people forgotten about Christ or the contributions of Shakespeare or Locke. Not every major civilization from the past has collapsed either.
