I tried to buy a piece of furniture online from there over the summer. The customer service rep kept me on hold for an hour and a half, only to tell me she forgot about me.

I have never stepped foot in one. That experience was tough enough. I imagine it's absolutely disgusting to go near there.

At least you didn't lose your virginity in a Walmart.  That'd be pretty sad.

Yes, once. It was terrible and unbelievably expensive for how low their standards for pretty much everything are. I ended up not buying anything because I knew I could get everything cheaper elsewhere. Might have had something to do with the fact that I was in Canada at the time, but I don't remember what the exchange was going for then.

I almost feel like this would be a deal breaker for me.

Unfortunately. In my current area, they're almost the offer that can't be refused. Hopefully, it is a stain relegated solely to undergrad.

This is another thing.  Some parts of the country are much more Walmart-dense than others.  Out here, if you want to shop cheap, Fred Meyer, Target, the dollar store, etc. are all generally more accessible options than Walmart.

Definitely.  Walmart has been good to me.  In 2001, I bought a hundred shares of walmart for about 38 dollars per share, and unloaded them a few years later for nearly 50 dollars per share.

I once went to four walmarts in Texas in one day!  I've been to walmarts in at least 12 countries.  I've been in Walmarts as far east as Shanghai and as far west as Honolulu, as far north as Montreal and as far south as Lima.  Love walmart. I especially enjoy the Chinese and Mexican walmarts.

Some walmarts are better than others, though.   Neither of the two Walmarts in Lancaster are very pleasant, so I don't go to them very often.  Also, walmarts in Pennsylvania don't sell vodka or wine or cognac.  (The state has a monopoly on booze here, as you know.)  I go there when we run out of bathroom tissue, or if I need a room dehumidifier or a new filter for the AC unit.  When I live near one of the nice walmarts I buy everything from Ben&Jerry's Wavy Gravy ice cream to Peking roast duck to LEGOs building blocks at them.

Absolutely.  The one closest to my house isn't that nice but I go for more ordinary household items, but about 10 miles away there's a super walmart......great groceries, everything.  One stop shopping and $$$$$$$ in my pocket.

I actually though everyone liked Walmart till I started posting here about 12 years ago, then I found a thread about walmart--the first of many--decrying its horrid effect on the people.  Here's what I can remember of the charges leveled at walmart on this forum:

Walmart puts mom'n'pop stores out of business.
Walmart diminishes and demoralizes the centers of small cities and towns.
Walmarts are predatory recruiters of marginally-skilled workers.
Walmart destroys local economies.
Walmart executives set foreign policy.
Walmart does not pay a living wage.
Walmart costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars due to their HR policies.
Walmart has more than once avoided paying billions of dollars in taxes.
Walmart employee policies contribute to the decline of the middle class.
Walmart causes the decline in US manufacturing jobs.
Walmart encourages foreign sweatshop labor.
Walmart encourages domestic sweatshop labor.
Walmart discourages American innovation.

Hmmm, there's probably more, but that's what I can remember at the moment.

Bashing Wal Mart is a pretty easy way to earn pretentious points.

This.  We always went to Meijer or Target as a kid (though I've been to Wal Mart a few times) because that was more convenient.   All the stores seem pretty similar to me, tbh.

Target ain't much better?  Target is worse.  Same stuff, higher prices.  I generally avoided Target, till recently.  As it happens, I live a bit closer to Target than to Walmart at the moment, and the Target nearest me is one of the decent ones, whereas the Walmart nearest me is one of the cheesier ones.  As a result, my current Target experience is a little better than my current Walmart experience, at least once we enter the store.  Walking from the car to the store is another matter.  (Lancaster Targets actually offer "horse and buggy" parking, which sounds bizarre to those who have not spent any more than a couple of months in Lancaster County.  The local public libraries and many of the major supermarkets also offer this option.  Areas so labeled must be avoided at all costs, as they offer only a chance for consumers to find their shoes covered in horseshit, as I have learned in the empirical fashion.)  Still, local eccentricities aside, Target generally does not offer as good a deal as Walmart.  For example, when my son was wearing diapers, we could get the 92-pack box of Pampers for $11.99 at the supermarket, $10.49 at Target, or $8.72 at Walmart.  I have observed that the same goes for Ben&Jerry's Wavy Gravy, Goya Black Beans, Mission Tortillas, Tito's Vodka, LEGO Ninjago bricks, Charmin Extra-Soft tissue, and GE 1500 HEPA air filters.  If several stores offer you exactly the same sweatshop-produced trinkets for different prices, it seems silly not to shop at the one that offers them to you at the lowest price.  Also, I've never visited a Walmart that invites its customers on a long walk through a carpet of horseshit, whereas both Targets around here offer that experience.
