With all the religious figures getting FF/HP votes, I figured I'd devote a thread to the 3 people who helped end faith/religion.

Opinions of the three killers of faith? And no, I'm not making this up, this is a widespread consensus that these 3 men killed the idea of faith:

Marx ended faith in government
Freud ended faith in self
Darwin ended faith in God

I'd say they created new faiths in place of those they supplanted.

Marx - from faith in spirit and classical economics, to faith in historical materialism and class struggle
Darwin - from faith in design and special creation, to faith in the productivity of evolution and natural processes
Freud - from faith in human rationality, to faith in the power of the unconscious and underlying sexual psychology

What, you can't even spell Charles? A very common English name? I know you aren't exactly the brightest sandwich in the toolbox, but Jesus.

All FFs, though Jung, Keynes, and Newton are much better than either of those three.

Eh, it was probably just a typo, I wouldn't be too hard on him.

Darwin and Freud FFs, Marx HP. I would also not say that the founder of Marxism was the one who "ended faith in government". I don't know who that title would go to, but certainly not him.

Either way, the combined works of the three of them all had a negative effect on religion, and opened the way for atheism to become more acceptable in society.

Freud and Marx basically have a similar.legacy today in that the conclusions they reached are universally agreed to be wrong, but if you don't actually understand the reaaoning behind them you cannot begin to understand psychology or sociology respectively. In fact, a lot of people once thought similar of Darwin - namely that evolution was true, but natural selection was bunkum - and spent a good few decades coming up with several harebrained replacement mechanisms.

All are FF's as thinkers, even if I am not a Marxist or a Freudian.

To be fair, "natural selection" has been used to justify so many horrible things (such as eugenics) that it's hard to blame wanting to find another way.

By people misunderstanding the 'natural' part of that phrase. Artificial selection has been understood and put in practice way longer than Darwin's theory, so I honestly think even the eugenics movement would have come about with or without Darwinism. (I think Malthus was a more malignant influemce tbh) Not that Darwin would have respected the eugenics movement - he thought it was dumb as hell. Also worrth noting that the Nazis banned his work, so...

All three are FFs, though I may be wrong on Freud as I'm not particularly familiar with his work.

You don't need to support the end of capitalism in order to recognize the importance of the Marx's work. His explanation about the crisis and the concentration that take place under the capitalist system is useful for the ones who want to correct the capitalism through the social democracy.

Sigmund Freud had some interesting ideas and certainly made some important contributions to psychology, but a lot of them probably had to do with his status as a cokehead.  I still laugh at the Oedipus complex.

Karl Marx was well-meaning, but still an HP.  His philosophy has trampled on human rights and condemned millions of people to poverty, starvation, and death at the hands of authoritarian governments.

Darwin was anti-slavery, and contrary to what most far-right Christians (including my denomination) believe, he did not devise the theory of evolution specifically to destroy the Bible or creationism.  If anything, I believe that evolution affirms God as Creator.

Voted one FF, two HPs, but in reality I'd probably have to go neutral on Freud and Darwin.

The idea that natural selection is some sort of ideology is really annoying. It's just a description of how biology works. It's like saying that if you believe in gravity then you support people falling off cliffs.
