He runs for congress in Westchester County and then the senate in 98 defeating D'Amato. He gains a lot of support for having taken unpopular positions that risked his political career and in the 2000s becomes a hero of the netroots for vocally criticizing the Iraq War. In 2008 he enters the Democratic primaries initially a dark horse against Obama and his fellow New York senator Clinton, however he has strong grassroots support and surprisingly is able to compete with Obama among African-American voters. Eventually he pulls off an upset and gets the Democratic nomination. What does the 2008 election look like and who would his and McCain's running mates be? Discuss with maps
