I get that it borders Vermont, but is that really enough of an explanation given how different the two states are on a political-cultural level? One is a swing state with a libertarian streak, whereas the other could pass as a liberal European country.

Lots of whites, lots of liberals, lots of white liberals, and he's from New England. Just like I think Obama being from Illinois was what pushed him over the edge in Indiana in 2008 (Clinton would have lost it if she were the nominee).

Neighboring state + 90% white + one of the most secular states (this may seem like a non factor, but I guarantee you if you poll Democrats who are less religious vs more religious, the less religious will be overwhelmingly Sanders while the more religious will be for Clinton). Its also underestimated that while the state has less Democrats (as a percentage) than neighboring New England states, the Democrats here are pretty liberal, there's really not many DINOs in New Hampshire like there is in the south and even areas of the Midwest.

Yeah, Obama being from Illinois definitely helped him in neighboring states (Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana) both in the primary and the general..

It's basically his home state, especially the western and northern parts.

In my experience, Democrats in New Hampshire are culturally similar to Democrats in Vermont to a large extent. The main difference between the two is that New Hampshire has more Republicans. That's admittedly an oversimplification, but it should give you some idea.
