A New America Series - 2000 General Election

Republicans shockingly nominated Congressman Ron Paul, a strongly anti-war, strict constitutionalism libertarian who vows to shrink Government - including the things they like. Paul's narrow majority of delegates over President Quayle came from several organizational wins in stats where Paul narrowly or clearly lost, so establishment Republicans, angered, walked out (This allowed Paul to pick his favorite candidate, Former Governor and Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater Jr. for VP). But despite increased chances in a narrowed GOP, President Quayle would go on to lose 3-1 in a vote of the delegates at the Independent Republican convention to Governor Mitt Romney. Romney is running on a moderate conservative ticket to steer to country back to budget sanity and keep the war effort under control, blaming Quayle's poor management. Senator Jim Leach joins the ticket.

Former Governor Sherrod Brown sweeps the Democratic primary process with his in your face progressivism and stands on that, but he's almost usurped a bit on some of those fronts by Businessman Donald Trump. Brown is for universal healthcare, concern for the enivornment over global warming, ending the wars, and expending quite a bit of effort to end poverty and fight money in politics. Trump also supports universal healthcare and ending the wars, but adds that with closing America's southern border, a tougher hand on trade deals, lowering taxes, and strengthening America's military. Trump's running mate is Former Assisstant Defense Secretary under President Brown and General Dalton Hunter. Hunter, like Trump, is a tough talking moderate who has been involved in administrations Republican and Democrat. Hunter has been something of a gaffe machine, saying under his breathe that Ron Paul "oughta be smacked in the mouth".

Please vote!

Love Goldwater but hate Paul, so it's going to be a tactical vote for Brown -- though I'd ideally prefer Romney.

Some early Senate races:

- Senator Lisa Phillips of Delaware (fic) is among the most liberal in the chamber, and has done a great deal to offend the Delaware political establishment left and right by opposing reductions in taxes and opposing big business subsidies. She faced a stiff primary challenge from New Castle County Executive Bob Bishop (fic), and faces a stiffer still challenge from local Businessman Mark Handell (fic). Handell has the confidence of business leaders, but is perhaps too conservative on other issues for Delaware's moderate/liberal electorate. Toss-up, no tilt.

- Minnesota Senator Rick Nolan is a perfect match for the state, but his utter disdain for fundraising has ensured that he has a real challenge on his hands in the year 2000. Though his opponent, Tim Pawlenty, is rather dull in his speeches, Pawlenty is out-raising Nolan 2-1, and that doesn't even include outside groups throwing their weight around in the state. Though Nolan initially held a 2-1 lead in polls over Pawlenty, the challenger has closed the gap quickly. Toss-Up, Tilt D.

- Indiana's Senator Evan Bayh is facing a total nobody in Danny Abner, a gaffe prone former State Representative. Safe D.

Unlike the RL equivalent, this America really is a centre-right country.

More like Atlas right-wingers have overtaken left-wingers when it comes to TLs.

A New America Series - 2000 General Election

An angry, outraged America received four choices, with the exception of the Independent Republicans, each gave a very populist message. Congressman Ron Paul calls for a libertarian political revolution by significantly shrinking the size of Government, Sherrod Brown calls for making the government by the people for the people, and TRUMP stands for TRUMPism: sealing the border, granting healthcare for all, and wide scale campaign finance reform. And the three rebels led and argued amongst one another. Despite his liberal stands, TRUMP found popularity in the South and the Midwest, and many polls showed a historic victory for the third party candidate. But last minute gaffes from VP candidate Dalton Hunter sunk his chances, and allowed Ron Paul to surge last minute ahead of the Independent Republican and siphon enough votes for a solid Brown victory.

Former Governor Sherrod Brown (D-OH)/Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) - 37.5%, 409 EV's
Businessman Donald Trump (I-NY)/Former Assisstant Defense Secretary Dalton Hunter (I-TX) - 27.1%, 82 EV's
Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX)/Former Governor Barry Goldwater Jr. (R-AZ) - 22.9%, 42 EV's
Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA)/Senator Jim Leach (R-IA) - 12.5%, 5 EV's
