What do you think , who will be the candidates for 2020 of the losing party?

On the Dem side I think:

Andrew Cuomo
Cory Booker
Kamala Harris
Kate Brown
Julian Castro
Russ Feingold

GOP:

Jeff Flake
Tom Cotton
Marco Rubio
Ted Cruz
Charlie Baker
Rick Scott
Bobby Jindal
Paul Ryan

I don't think Cuomo will run. I think he's finished in 18. I wouldn't rule out Sanders giving it another shot either, or Tom Wolfe of PA. On the GOP side it's a big if if Rubio holds onto his senate seat, I think that Sandoval is a possibility also, also Rob Portman.

Cuomo is finished if he runs unsucessfully for a third term as NY-Governor. If he steps down or gets reelected in 2018, he’ll have a shot. That Gov. Tom Wolf (D-PA) throws his hat into the ring is unrealistic in my opinion. He’ll be 72 in 2020 and I doubt that he has any desire for higher office. He’ll be happy to serve two terms as governor. However, he might end up as running mate for a younger candidate (like Booker, Castro or Heinrich).

Sanders would be 78 at the time. Tom Wolf has no name recognition outside of PA. Rubio isn't running for his senate seat.

Rubio try again in 2020 or 2024 after he's elected governor in 2018.

A lot of people don't have name recognition outside their state four years before they run for President.

Either way, these threads aren't often accurate. (Who would have predicted Sanders or Trump running in 2012? Who would have predicted Cain running in 2008?)

That's the fun of it: trying to predict the unpredictable.

This, plus looking back on these when 2020 rolls around is lots of fun as well.

Rob Portman
WILD CARD!!!!: John Hoeven*

Democrats
Cory Booker
Tim Kaine
John Bel Edwards

WILD CARD!!!!: Joe Manchin*

* I don't think the people I've selected as "wild card" will actually run or receive major speculation, but I think it would be interesting if they did.

Every cycle has a substantial contingent of candidates you never would have predicted.  But in the case of 2016, most people back in 2012 did accurately predict the 2016 Democratic frontrunner.  And quite a few of the Republican names being mentioned back then (Christie, Rubio, Bush, Kasich, Jindal, Paul, Huckabee, Santorum) did end up running.  If you follow this stuff closely, you'll have a better chance of accurately predicting at least some of the candidates years in advance than you would if you just randomly listed a bunch of governors and senators.

On that note, here's what we were saying about 2016 way back in 2011:

You have to love the "Kasich is too unpopular" line.

Maybe O'Malley tries again?

For the Republicans: Rubio or Cruz (unless they are the nominee this year and lose), Rand Paul, Tim Scott, Charlie Baker, Nikki Haley, Scott Walker, maybe Paul Ryan if we're desperate

I don't think Ryan will run until at least 2024. He has a cushy position as Speaker if the House & it would be an advantage for him to wait.

Jon Bel Edwards would have no chance in the current Democratic Party. I doubt he'd even try.
