I’ve wondered about this ever since I read that the NRA’s membership only constitutes about 5% of American gun owners.

No. Contrary to libertarian crazies' beliefs, you don't need an AR-15 to hunt. If you think you do, you shouldn't be hunting anyway.

While they're not my cup of tea, they are terrific guns for varmint control, among other professional uses. In such context, they are definitely a tool. Libertarians never talk about hunting in their gun rights arguments, anyway.

Other: My dad owns guns, but I've never once seen them in my entire life. He keeps them locked in a safe in his bedroom closet because of my youngest brother. They've never come out once. I don't know what they even look like, other than the fact that apparently he has two revolvers in there. My uncle likes to hunt and owns a few rifles.

Both of them are pretty pro-gun on the whole (they take the same positions I do - no actual gun control but greater regulations on sales, modifications, etc) but they do not like or trust the NRA. Mainly because both supported the NRA in the Clinton era (my Uncle was even a donor) but became disillusioned after Wayne LaPierre spent millions adding a private bathroom, shower, and sauna to his office. The NRA headquarters in NoVa is massive. We passed it by chance when driving from Manassas to West Virginia on a family vacation a few years back.
