From 1010 WINS NY:

Rep. Charles Rangel is once again pushing a bill to re-instate the military draft, a year after the effort caused a flurry of campaign-season conflict over the war in Iraq. Rangel, an anti-war Democrat from Harlem, offered the same measure last year, only to vote against it when Republicans brought the bill to the House.

At the time, GOP leaders were upset over a growing buzz on the Internet that the Bush administration might begin drafting American citizens if Bush won re-election. They blamed Democrats for fueling the speculation in a cynical attempt to win voters to their candidate, John Kerry.

Rangel said he is again calling for a draft because military recruitment is falling short. "Everyone knows that we went into this war with an insufficient number of troops, but the problem now is filling the ranks of those units that are already on the ground," said Rangel.

The veteran lawmaker has railed against the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war, called for the removal of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and argued that the burdens of the war disproportionately have fallen on the poor and minorities.

Rangel does something good for once. I urge the Democrats to support this.

I do too, but it has less to do with the quality of this action, and more to do with the results of the 2006 midterms.

Both work out, the GOP gets the draft they secretly want and we see the death of the Democratic Party.

I don't secretly want a draft, though I would love to see the Democrats vote for this. They don't have enough votes to pass it anyway, though, and Bush would obviously veto it, so it would take pretty strong bipartisan support.

Bottom line: there's (thankfully) not going to be a draft.

agreed -he should let the Republicans push for the reinstatement of the draft themselves.  after all, this is their war.  they are the governing party, and the onus should be on them.  they should take most -if not all- of the responsibility.  i really do not understand why Rangel insists on shooting the Democratic Party in the foot, especially in regard to young voters.  we are the only age group that gave the majority of our votes to John Kerry in the last election -one would think they would think twice before alienating us.

A word to the wise; be careful what you wish for. You guys are all of age to eligible for the draft.

BTW has Rangel got a bill number yet?

Um, it's not going to pass. I'd just love to see the Democrats try this.

I'll take the zero percent chance risk it passes in exchange for Democrat losses.

America will pull out of Iraq before re-instating the draft.

America will pull out of Iraq before re-instating the draft.

We're racking up the fatalities there, while there's massive torture scandal at Gitmo. 69 US soldiers have died in Iraq so far this month. I support the nuanced Iraq policy of GET THE f**ck OUT NOW.

http://icasualties.org/oif/

Justing counting US soldiers, and not other coalition soldiers, mercenaries (some of whom are US citizens), Iraqi policemen, soldiers, and civilians, we have

1656 killed

12348 wounded

Rangel is an idiot for coming up with this, but it could actually wind up hurting the GOP more.  He could win up with a co-sponsor, and if this ever does come up for a vote, more Republicans will probably vote for it than Dems

West Virginia or Nevada will be the closest.  Out of those listed New Hampsiere will probably seethe biggest change as it should wind up in the fairly safe category for Kerry.

North Carolina definatley becomes battleground.  South Carolina could becoe battleground their is lots of fighting going on between the Republican Govenor and Republican dominated legislature which could damage the party in South Carolina

No matter who wins the primary, Alaska seems pretty posed for a Democratic win Knowles is in vey good shape

The recent polls have shown the gaps closing in North Carolina, and West Virginia isn't exactly a safe state

Point: Smash is delusional

So? A lot of Republicans were off in their predictions in the 1936, 1948, and 1998 elections.

Amazing how instead of adressing my point Phillip has to pull off posts I made about a year ago on this board ( most of which coincided with the polling data at the time)

Yep, tons will vote for it like last time. How many Republicans voted for it then. That's right.

Hah, why be scared of serving your country. Only unpatriotic losers like opebo and BRTD are afraid to give their life for their country.

You didn't have a point. You had a wish.

So if this comes up for a vote you don't think more Republicans would vote for it then Dems??

By the way as far as predictions go we both sucked.  Looking at the old prediction maps we both had 44 states right in our final map (D.C included) & 7 states wrong.

Why would they again? Any district that wasn't populated by a bunch of socialists and fools would've voted Rangel out for proposing it in the first place.

With the recruiting goals being missed month after month the situation is a bit more desperate than it was during the last vote.  Anyway no where near enough will vote on this bill to pass it, but their probably will be a few Republicans that will vote for it, as opposed to basically just Rangel on the Dems side

Zero Republicans voted for it last time. Two Democrats did.

I fully admit that my prediction sucked, but I admitted the entire time it was partisan. I was just making a map of the best possible scenario for Bush.
