Christie's attack clearly worked. It drove Rubio from a solid second place in the upper teens to a shameful fifth place and barely cracking double digits. But Christie got basically no increase in support. Why?

Chris Christie is such a standoffish jerk that Donald Trump looks like an eternally chill guy in comparison. Combine that with a lack of charisma...

Actually, I'm pretty sure he did gain from it, since he was at 4% or so in the polls before the debate, iirc.  As for why he didn't do better than he did, Rachel Maddow explained it pretty well on her show today: unlike Kasich, he just didn't connect well with voters in town halls.  He projected himself as brittle and confrontational, rather than warm and caring, as Kasich did.

Yep, and clearly, Kasich ran the best campaign in NH.

The Republican electorate sees him as a corrupt liberal and no matter how well he did in the debates he couldn't shed that image

It isn't that Christie didn't gain; it's just that Kasich and Bush gained more.

Christie didn't do well in New Hampshire for all of the reasons given in this thread, plus....well....there's a reason that we haven't had a president of his girth since Taft for nothing.

Christie made Marco look bad, yes, but he didn't do anything in the debate to make himself look better by comparison. As someone who was supporting Christie, I got a little chuckle out of him pouncing on Rubio's repetitive talking points by deploying his own repetitive 'Governors vs Washington insiders' talking point.

Because Rubios support went to kasich and Bush. Some may have also went to Trump. Its well known the republicans do not like Christie at all, that is why he didn't receive any bump in support.

Whether its right or not, republican voters will never forget the events right before the 2012 election between Christie and Obama. Christie will never be supported by the republican base anymore.

I don't think Christie hugging Obama had much of an effect. I think Christie's low approval ratings at home and "Bridgegate" cost him a lot of votes.

Yeah people hate "Washington Talking Points" because they hate Washington overall nowadays. He just painted Rubio as a typical Washington-style politician people and that costs Rubio votes.
