Hey guys,

My dad, and I are planning to visit the States in the Summer (Between July and August), and I'd really appreciate some help. We'd be looking to visit the major east coast cities (New York, Boston, Philly, DC) yet we're unsure whether to go for a package one, or to simply plan it our-self.

I know it's an extremely broad ask but is there anything vital I should know/expect/plan for this trip.

I'm West Coast born and raised, but I might be able to help you here.

Pack light and prepare for a substantial variety of temperature and weather. Plan the trip yourself; it will be more fun for you and your pop that way.

I took a trip to D.C. recently, and it's the place I can best help you with. Here's some info (my opinion):
Best:
-Capitol Building
-Holocaust Museum (if you don't mind seeing... shocking stuff)
-American History Museum (Smithsonian)
-Air and Space Museum (Smithsonian)
-Library of Congress

Decent:
-Essentially all other Smithsonian museums
-National Archives
-Newseum
-Lincoln Memorial (I'll lump in the rest of the memorials here, too. All memorials.)

Not That Great:
-Oddly, the White House. At least when I was there, the tour is short as heck and you don't really see anything.

Hope this helps.

I'd definitely recommend the Newseum in DC. If you're at all interested in journalism and freedom of expression issues, you can spend all day there and not run out of things to see.
