For me, it seems to be related to sunlight.  I'm inclined to become apathetic/pessimistic sometime in November and for it to last until about January 20.

But not every year.  This winter, I wasn't the least bit down.  I was surprised, but I don't have a good reason why.

I'm most upbeat/energetic, it seems, around the end of March.
