It's the classic security vs liberty debate. They are scared, not idiots.

They're not mutually exclusive. It's not hard to have scared idiots.

In fairness, 30% of all SC Republicans wish the South won according to this poll (and only a whopping 36% are glad the North did).

I would've expected this to be higher.  This is actually progress, considering how universal Lost Causism was in this country until like a generation ago.

This is the real story imo.  Further evidence that TRUMP's rhetoric on the Muslims is hardly that extreme compared to the attitudes of the actual voters.

Which is why I'll never go to South Carolina, the state that thinks I'm committing an illegal act by having a religion they want illegalized.

the Republicans in my area make SC Republicans look like fascists in comparison.

Half of Republicans agree with Trump on that, at least the other half are decent people...

Of course they do. They are disloyal treasonous racists!

The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitors, up with the stars;
While we rally round the flag, boys, we rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

So they're supporting a guy born and raised in Yankee New York City?

Well, his rhetoric is closer to what they like than some of their own candidates.

Most human beings instinctively support their own countries when it comes to matters of war.

Not when said countries haven't existed for 150 years.

You mean have never existed on a legal basis?

I'm not a Southern secessionist sympathizer, but such jingoism cannot go unchallenged when it makes use of one of the few Civil War songs that had good Union and Confederate lyrics.

Our Dixie forever! She's never at a loss!
Down with the eagle and up with the cross
We'll rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again,
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

If the South had won the Civil War, they'd be lucky if they reached Argentina's level of development. I suspect it would not look dissimilar from Brazil, more likely. God help them if they started annexing bits of the Caribbean as they planned.

Yes, and all of New York's precious resources would not have been wasted on them thankfully. What's bad for them is good for us.

Really?  If anything I think the lost cause is more popular than before.  My parents grew up in the Midwest/West during the '70s and '80s and they said that it was acknowledged by most people that the war was about slavery and the North was right.  Whenever I go back to visit relatives in those places I see a fair number of rebel flags.  The history nerd in me wanted to tell them that their ancestors fought for the Union, but I decided not to.

I wouldn't exactly bet on the CSA by itself in a war with Spain over Cuba etc, especially in the 1870s or 1880s.

That said, Texas and Oklahoma oil would guarantee that the CSA would become a very rich country one way or another.

The Muslim ban is supported by 80% of Trump supporters. Learn to read a poll.

A new poll shows 38 percent of Donald Trump's supporters in South Carolina wish the South had won the Civil War.

Another 38 percent say they aren't sure, while just 24 percent say they are glad the Union won, the poll by Public Policy Polling released Tuesday finds.

Seventy percent of Trump backers also believe that the Confederate battle flag should still be flying over their state capitol.

I'd be interested to know how these numbers compare to those for South Carolina residents in general; until we know those numbers, how can you conclude that these folks are nutty Trump supporters rather than just typical southerners?

It would be interesting to see the overall S.C. numbers.
But remember, we are dealing with Trump supporters ..... so regardless, they are going to be "nutty" in any case.

That amounts to just 14% of SC Republicans by the way.

That is probably the lowest it has been since the Republican Party became a thing in the state again.

If you are winning poor white Southerners, that entails a certain percentage will be confederate sympathizers. What percentage of Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter's voters were pro-confederate, especially several decades ago?

I would say that is cutural appropriation more than anything else.

Lost Cause mythology is nowhere near where it was back in the early 20th century when it dominated Hollywood and even academic history.
