While visiting family in Washington, I visited my first two Pacific states, saw and swam in the Ocean for the first time, kayaked the Columbia, backpacked for the first time around 6,000 feet above sea level, and saw part of the UW campus in Seattle. I picked up a few books down the street from campus: "On Revolution" and "The Origins of Totalitarianism" by Hannah Arendt, and a compilation: "Uncertain Transition: Ethnographies of Change in the Postsocialist World". It sadly only comprises Eastern Europe (I can't seem to find anything on Central Asia).

Check out Islam After Communism: Religion and Politics in Central Asia by Adeeb Khalid. I got it as a textbook for a class, but ended up reading the whole thing because of how engaging it was. Another good text if you like reading case studies is Ethnographies of the State in Central Asia which is a compilation of a bunch of essays on the region and how states operate in Central Asia and how citizens relate to their countries.

I think I'll go check those out myself as well. I love learning and reading about Central Asia. Its one of the more interesting regions/depressing regions of the world but it never gets any publicity. I had a few friends from Uzbekistan who used to always tell me about life after communism but I fell out of touch the last few years w/ them Sad

However, I do tend to focus more on Transcaucasia than on Central Asia. I have more a vested personal interest in the former but I think both needed to be discussed more.

Thank you! I'm trying to manufacture an honors thesis re: post-communism or something (I don't wanna talk about it) but the only stuff I know on Central Asia is from Encyclopaedia Britannica online. From those small scraps, it looks like an interesting situation: reluctance to secede from the Soviet Union, the maintenance of power of former Communist Parties, the fact that Islam seems more like a cultural attachment and thus apparently religious radicalism is weak compared to the secular nationalists in control of government, and urban Jewish and Slavic imports from Europe.

Cool! I wrote an honors thesis on a really similar topic in Belarus. One thing you might want to look into is the stability of the different Central Asian regimes with regard to the leader's former position in the Soviet Union. For example, people have argued that Kyrgyzstan's relatively strong democracy and the success of the Tulip revolution are partly thanks to the fact that the first leader after independence, Askar Akayev, was relatively young and unexperienced in politics compared to his neighbors, and was thus more influenced by public opinion and easier to overthrow than someone like Nazarbayev.

Another cool thing to look into is the contrived histories that have been set up post independence to give some meaning to the existence of countries which were really only created in the 20th century to make it easier for the Soviets to govern. Turkmenbasy wrote a book called Ruhnama which traces a fake history of Turkmenistan back to Biblical times and offers basically a new religion (centered around him, of course) to prevent a rise in Islamism. In Tajikistan, they have refashioned an obscure 10th century warlord as a supposed founder of the country and moral guide.

Strange... If there were three things I was going to describe you as...
I mean, I do believe Israel has a right to exist so I guess that makes me a Zionist even though I'm very anti-settlement on the whole. Of course, Zionist to this guy is basically an insult.

Oh yeah, and while calling me a Zionist, he also called me anti-Israel. I kid you not.

And to top it off, he looks like Sebastian Bach on meth.

My girlfriend (from Chicago) is likely going to be in town for when Being as an Ocean and Hundredth are playing here. And then she found out Hatebreed who she used to really be into (I didn't even know they were still together), are playing two nights earlier at the same venue...

Fun fact, when I was a college freshman I used "Hatebreed sucks" as a screen name on an Internet forum. So I never dreamed I'd possibly end up seeing them....with a girl who was at that time in the 6th grade.

Got the order today from my boss to "fix" the accounting for one of our products to "up" the sales of this product (on paper).

I don't like the fact of false accounting at ALL, but he also got pressure from his regional supervisor to increase the "sales" of this certain product.

Hmmmm ...

I go looking for another job if I were you.  Even if you don't get caught, a business that is rigging the books typically doesn't last long.

Unlikely. The cheat is extremely effective and the revision is totally unlikely to find it in the books. And it's only for one product out of thousands.
That you know of. Plus, while you may be applying a subtle cheat, others may not, especially if a subtle cheat is unable to provide the level of improvement being demanded of them. Furthermore, there's the danger that some of the other mid-level managers than your boss are encouraged by this negative example to cook the books for their own reasons.

Ugh, I hated it. Calling for Dems in central PA was an anxious and occasionally tense affair. Door to door saw less of that, especially when they noticed we were young, but not none. I much preferred database work, answering phone calls, voter reg, helping those that entered the office, GOTV etc.

Hundredth puts on such a great show. Wish I could see them again. Also, Hatebreed is such a guilty pleasure. I rarely listen to them anymore, but I jammed them a lot when I was in middle school.

I'm currently taking care of a friend's cat in my apartment. He's very small and energetic and kept me up all night because he kept jumping on top of my dresser, which has my computer and record player on it. He's a nice boy, but this is my first time ever having an extended interaction with a cat so I didn't expect to be losing sleep like I did. I have him for two more days.

Volunteering was all worth it, considering that I can get a limited edition "Adams for Hillary" sticker, which A) Implies the endorsement of John Adams and b) Is three things photoshopped together.

Everything about this is gross.

32/2 + 7 = 23.

25 is perfectly acceptable and not gross.

I'm doing a community involvement program before college officially starts and today was the first full day, so that was nice. We helped an old woman with her yards and she told us about how she used to do ballroom dancing but can't anymore, and then we went down and interviewed some undocumented day laborers about labor and immigration issues, which actually was really fascinating for me personally. Hot as inks, but it was a pretty good day nonetheless.

Ew, phone banking is awful. I phone banked when I worked for AFP and couldn't get to the doors (which was somewhat often despite Florida's reputation as the "Sunshine State") and of course during the campaigns I have worked on. People on the phones are far, far worse than those at the doors because the phone gives the person a degree of anonymity and thus, a license to be nasty.

I of course had bad experiences at the doors too (one time during the 2012 campaign, an 85 year old woman who was going door to door with me decided to come out as a lesbian to me because she had never told anyone and knew she'd never see me again. Another time last summer on my last day at AFP I was threatened with a weed wacker by a man) and of course, while poll watching in the 2012 campaign at my own High School, a guy threatened to physically attack me because I apparently was anti-woman for daring to have my candidates sign on a stick.

Good luck, CC, you'll be in the lions den!

Oh yeah, and I started my second (and hopefully final) year at TCC. I think I have a semester or two left after this one before I can transfer into FSU.

I'm running off to Eastern Europe tomorrow and probably won't be back until early October. I should still be able to post, but I'll probably be on here a lot less often until I get back. Here's hoping absolutely nothing interesting happens between now and the debates!
