Padre Pio's. Boston's been hosting it for the past several days, probably because our archbishop's a Capuchin.

I would have said that in the above post but I decided to lead with a 'hook'. Leave people wondering if I went to the Mutter Museum or something.

That sounds exactly as lofty as I presume it is, actually. [/shade at Joseph Campbell]

Check yourself before you Shrek yourself.

Yeah, it's just basic stuff wrapped in fancy language. I think that everyone sees those patterns in literature without actually being taught about them, even if we don't really think about it much Tongue

So much to do, so much to see

Fun fact: 'All Star' and 'Midnight City' have only a one-BPM difference.

And All Star has basically the same chords as Imagine.

I'm guessing you've seen the Neil Cicierega mix then?

Oh wow. I had no idea.

From what I've heard, in Italy he's venerated by some to an extent that strikes me as potentially reaching idolatry, though I don't know enough to have real thoughts on the matter.

Yeah, Cardinal O'Malley joked about that and how it was kind of weird in his sermon.

That aside, I'm a few pages into my first Psychology of Religion paper and should probably spend part of today watching primary sources (i.e. Japanese TV from about three years ago) for my thesis. I spent six hours lying in bed after I, technically, woke up, which was a terrible idea.

The key is to listen to that maddened, howling part of you that claims to know with utter certainty that you will die alone, and be willing to compromise everything, including your dignity, to avoid that scenario.

I find it fascinating how our worldviews are almost polar opposites yet there are one or two specific things we're in perfect agreement over.

I saw you posted my remarks to the Silvermine. I'm unsure why: I essentially argued that you should listen to that groveling voice in your head telling you to supplicate yourself to any woman due to your sheer fear of loneliness. I don't necessarily view it as good advice so much as representative of my own pathetic situation. Nevertheless, I appreciate your approval.

I thought it was pretty obvious that the main reason I silvermined this post was because I felt it spoke to my own pathetic situation as well.

Although my reading of it differs slightly in that 1. I find it applicable to all forms of social interaction, not just romance, and 2. I'm not and will never interpret it as an encouragement to actively seek out people (as that would be creepy) but merely as one to never reject people out of spite or pride.

Still looking forward to the pontification you promised us, btw.

Oh, I'd love to be in a PhD program and will probably apply once I take the GRE, but I'd hate to be pigeonholed into academia in my 20's. At mobile, so I'll pontificate later.

Re: Pontification, since I promised it.

I suppose the reason for the occasional alignment of our views is twofold. The first (1) is obvious: we're both semi-introverted white males with interests in the social "sciences" and at least slightly interested in academia. This, most obviously, leads to a certain sense of isolation. Secondly, it may lead to a certain amount of cynicism in the ability to obtain employment in the "regular" spheres of life. Secondly, despite our different worldviews, we're both suspicious, to some extent, of radical individualism. This is, in your case, the result of your social democratic politics. In my case, it's the result of a conservative discontent with the modern, and my association of the modern with the... shall we say, absurdly individualistic. Other concepts, like various secular manifestations of some sort of "original sin", are also exemplary. This also results in a preference for some sort of communitarianism, though yours might be a bit friendlier than mine.

That makes a great deal of sense. I think that's about right.

The only thing I'd clarify is that I'm actually fairly happy with my life. I have a lot of concerns for my future, but usually I'm able to remove it and focus on the present, where things for me are frankly going as well as I have any right to hope they can be.

One thing I find funny is that, to me, fraternities embody the very worst of modernistic hyper-individualism, so I find it interesting that you're so much into them.

Well, I know this is gonna make me look like an awful person, and I'm sure conservatives will have a field day with this, but I'm changing my gender back to "None". IDGAF what pronouns you use, so long as you use the right "your". if you're skeptical or whatever, feel free to shoot me a PM, I'll give you my reasons. Short version is, I've tried life as a "her" and it felt... wrong. Not like me. So, terrible as it may seem, I'm going back.

TL;DR: I'm LLR (he/she/it), and you're not.

Also: taking notes on "Central Asia: 130 Years of Russian Domination, a Historical Overview" while drinking a six pack of Blue Moon because life is a meaningless vacuum punctuated by base pleasures. As classic, waiting on that text-back, yo. Tobacco? Sadly, no.

That's me with Religious Studies: The Making of a Discipline and almost-flat gin and tonics.

I'm up to two discussion groups under my belt as TA and it's going quite fine, the topics are interesting and I can get good discussion going. I also completed 5 hours (officially) of paid 'compliance training', which is as boring as it sounds, yes. I learned that it's apparently not a good idea to throw books at people - who'd a thought? But I got money from it, so ha.

I had an awkward moment where I saw somebody I knew, but really didn't want to even make eye contact with her (because I dislike her), but I have found out that this attempt failed.

I'm considering self-publishing one of my terrible verbose treatises in a few months and try to make some money off of it (ha!). Good idea?
