English: http://www.thelocal.it/20160225/live-italy-set-for-crunch-vote-on-gay-unions

Italiano: http://www.rainews.it/dl/rainews/articoli/Maxiemendamento-votato-con-la-fiducia-posta-dal-Governo-50a321cd-28af-4a12-9977-bdaa5f6a7c3b.html

173 senators voted in favour, 71 against and none abstained.

The bill will go back to the lower House for a vote sometime in the next two months, but that vote is merely a formality.

Unfortunately, the bill had to be watered down by the a stepchild adoption measure being dropped to gain passage.

Italy is the last country in Western Europe to not have some form of marriage/legal joining for same-sex couples. The country still lacks any comprehensive anti-discrimination laws as well. Polling regularly showed majority support for same-sex civil unions above 50% since 2013.

I'm looking right now, but I can't find specific numbers. But from what I've read, PD, M5S, and People's Alliance supported it. I'll keep looking.

Fantastic news! Of course it's a ridiculously moderate-heroish compromise, but this being Italy, it's still impressive we got this.

NCD sounds like they might have supported it, but I can't find the numbers. Alfano was instrumental in torpedoing the stepchild amendment, but bragged in an interview:

Renzi and the PD have vowed to bring stepchild adoption back sometime in the future.

EDIT - Are People's Alliance and Liberal Popular Alliance separate parties? If so, they both supported it.

EDIT #2 - 161 votes are needed for a majority in the Senate. There were originally 155 in favor, and finally 18 of the 19 ALA Senators supported it.

Important to note that Renzi got this through by tying it to a vote of confidence.

I know, right? It's such a shame that so many Catholics will fill squares protesting same-sex civil unions and stepchild adoption, but not get upset about racism, pedophilia in the church, and rampant domestic violence in Italy.

You'd think that by now religious folks would have caught on.

I can say only as for myself and I get upset by all of things/phenomena you mentioned. But you know, state do not want to enforce racism act or Compulsory Domestic Violence act so I guess it would be hard to protest that.
