If Hubert Humphrey  went up against Richard Nixon  8 years earlier how would things be  different?

Hubert would have lost. JFK was the only Democrat to beat Nixon in 1960. Not sure about LBJ, he could also have won. But no other Democrat.

Vice President Richard Nixon (R-CA)/Former Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (R-NY): 302 EV. (51.77%)
Senator Hubert Humphrey (D-MN)/Senator Stuart Symington (D-MO): 227 EV. (46.84%)
Senator Harry F. Bird (Dixie-VA)/Senator Strom Thurmond (Dixie-SC): 8 EV. (0%) (faithless electors)

JFK, Symington, Stevenson and maybe Truman could have defeated Nixon.

Humphrey would have lost, but he would have done better in rural areas. Probably something like:

Nixon/Lodge
Humphrey/Young
Byrd/Thurmond

Truman? In 1960? At 76? Remember that Truman wasn't considered a great president before the 1960s/1970s.

He was the only one capable of uniting the New Deal Old Guard with the New Democrats.

No idea how accurate this would be, but it's an incredibly pretty map.
