Okay, a few things:

1. Um, no he wasn't. Hubert Humphrey was a Senator for 15 years and Vice President for four; Nixon was a former Congressman, Senator, and two-term Vice President. Wallace was a former one-term governor in 1968 - his time in major elected office amounted to four years.
2. More importantly, Wallace was the pro-segregation, pro-Vietnam candidate in 1968. His entire campaign was based around his record of denying equal rights to blacks. I'm really struggling to understand this thought process: "Well, on the one hand, he is a racist, anti-American extremist, but at least he has the experience to pass his agenda!"

I don't say this ever, but you really nailed me there. Nixon did spend 8 years as Vice-President and Humphrey did for 4 years.

How would an Ohio guy be a segregationist?  And there are plenty of liberals and black nationalists who support a "back to Africa" measure even today.  Are they segregationists?
