Ike joins the Dems, loses the nomination to Stevenson, who picks Eisenhower to run with him. Taft gets the Republican nomination and Nixon is still on the GOP ticket.

Assuming it's a two-way race, Stevenson/Eisenhower wins a close race. But not sure about the southern racists. They could have run third party and give the White House to Taft, who would have been succeeded by Nixon in August 1953.

✓Governor Adlai E. Stevenson (D-IL)/General Dwight D. Eisenhower (D-NY): 274 EV. (49.4%)
Senator Robert A. Taft (R-OH)/Senator Richard M. Nixon (R-CA): 257 EV. (49.0%)

With Southern racist ticket:

✓Senator Robert A. Taft (R-OH)/Senator Richard M. Nixon (R-CA): 302 EV. (47.2%)
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson (D-IL)/General Dwight D. Eisenhower (D-NY): 172 EV. (41.1%)
Senator Strom Thurmond (Dixie-SC)/Senator Richard B. Russell (Dixie-GA): 57 EV. (10.6%)
