My prediction: If the GOP wins the White House in '08, then, unless Obama was the unsuccessful Dem. nominee, he will be the early frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in '12.
OTOH, if the Dems win in '08, then the early frontrunner for the GOP nomination in '12 will be someone who doesn't have very high national name ID right now, but will gain national prominence during the '08 election fight. Possibly Romney or Huckabee if they're not nominated in '08, but it could also be the unsuccessful '08 VP candidate.

Sadly, it's still possible for JD Hayworth to make a comeback in 2010 in a run for Governor.
Will Napolitano be term-limited?
(Actually, she'd be a potential Democratic candidate for President in 2016-2020, maybe 2012 if the Democrats lose in 2008.)

Since Brian Schweitzer has made it clear he is not interested in ever running for president:
Barack Obama or Eliot Spitzer
And for the Republicans, if their 2008 nominee doesn't make it that November:
Rudy Giuliani or Haley Barbour

Democrats
-Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (for 2012), New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (if he wins next year -in which case, he will be the main candidate for 2016 once he completes two terms, if he wins them),
and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in 2016.
Republicans
-South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. i can't think of anymore at this time.
I would love to see Shweitzer run, but he is to conservative to get the democratic nomination(pro-gun and fiscally responsible) unless the dems loose in 08 and get really desperate.

Haley Barbour seems like a likely 2012 candidate should the Republicans lose in 2008....
....assuming he wins reelection in 2007, which he won't, so it's all moot.

If Edwards doesn't get anywhere in 2008, he will really be over politically. I highly doubt someone is going to go running for a 1 term senator, who hasn't held office in 8 years.

I am saying that because he could be a potential VP in 2008, making him frontrunner in 16.

I could have sworn that he did say something to that effect not too long ago...
Anyways, I will be glad if I am wrong. If we lose with Hillary in 2008, at least we will have a pleasant choice deciding between Barack Obama or Brian Schweitzer four years hence.

Most primary voters impose a litmus test based on two main factors -the Iraq War and abortion. If anything, his stance on gun rights and his fiscal conservatism should help him with Democrats eager to make a play for the intermountain West. Don't underestimate the pragmatism of primary voters -they chose Kerry over Dean and Kucinich in '04 for a reason.
