God this election is awful.  That debate was so frustrating to watch.
Barack, please, I need you to stay.
Hell I'd even take W at this point.

I'm utterly terrified of that idea. If we didn't have the 22nd amendment historically, we'd have had Reagan a third time and Clinton a third time, and that just terrifies me. Hell, at this point I'd say limit the president to one 6-year term or even a 4-year term.

Yes, Obama would be a far better Lord Protector.

Same here. And Reagan's health was clearly in decline by the end of his 2nd term: I'm not sure if he would have been able to run for a 3rd even if he had wanted to. If he had, it would have been painfully obvious on the campaign trail.

FWIW, the best President of the 20th century was elected four times.

I wouldn't call Nixon the best President of the 20th century, tho he did serve with him when he was elected the first two times as Vice President.

I like the idea of a single 6-year term. The President may have 4 full years, but he can hardly accomplish something meaningful past his first year. Second year, the midterm campaign starts and then one is already running for reelection.

Btw, I don't think Reagan would actually run in 1988.

I favor six years. I think eight is far too long.

It would be better to switch to a parliamentary form of governor, and let a ceremonial president to be chosen among the lineal descendants of former presidents.

I like the idea of one four-year term; it would encourage Presidents to do more governing and not squander 75% of their first term because they're triangulating for re-election. Of course, for that to work, you would need to also amend the Constitution to specify that both House and Senate terms would be four years as well (no term limits).

I maintain that a huge problem with our system of government these days is the fact that a) elected officials are way too concerned with upcoming elections and all the crap that comes with it, and b) our institutional balance of power is way too stable/inflexible for a 21st century first-world superpower.

In all fairness would Obama have done half of the stuff he has if he was expecting to face Ryan/Romney/Rubio in 2016?

The problem with this is that first off if a president is doing a good job they are denied a chance to continue, the second is without elections to worry about and only four years, we may get more and more insane candidates unrestrained by having elections to worry about.

An alternative approach might be to have no limit on the number of terms a President can serve, except the terms could not be consecutive.

The President would not be distracted from governing, because of the next Presidential election. However a popular President could be re-hired after a 4 year break, so there would still be an incentive to govern well in the present term.

FWIW, the bestthird worst President of the 20th century was elected four times.

Best president of the century was only elected once and was before the 4 timer. He inspired the one who was president 60 years later.

This is all so small beer thinking. I believe voters should be free to elect anyone they want for as long as they want, and that includes folks who are not US citizens, or even live in the US. So there!

I agree with Mike.  Most Presidents wear out their welcome after 6.
