I say yes. Google definition: "a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution"

to a certain extent, all countries on earth are "oligarchic". I don't think America is significantly any more oligarchic than most democratic countries (including OP's country) aside from a few  well-run egalitarain nations in Northern and Western Europe.

I'd say we're already in a mild stage of being an oligarchy. It's pretty blatant too when you look at voting patterns in Congress and political donations to the various politicians who made said votes.

Princeton did a study on policy in the US, and the result was that it almost always favors the agenda of the wealthy: http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=9354310

All in all, we have it better than others, but the wealthy are significantly squandering our future for their own personal greed and if we don't start to act on this, it will get far, far worse.

The closest the United States got to a true oligarchy was during Democratic-Republican era when only the landed class could vote. Any claims that we are anywhere near that level of undemocratic government are ludicrous.

If you do not believe corporate america and the billionaire class don't run the politicians you are extremely oblivious.

Hasn't it always been an oligarchy, to varying degrees? Of course, there have been times when it was more democratic  (i.e. the Jacksonian era), only to return to its more traditional inclination.

Yes, but only because the majority of the voters in this country are cool with that.

Left wing intelligentsia, my friends.

This thread makes an excellent case for oligarchy, I give it that.

(And if I have to see "Your" used incorrectly, I swear)

Yes, but only because the majority of the voters in this country are cool with that.

I know, right Sad

If every voter in this country actually bothered to thoroughly research their candidates and what the issues are, and exactly why they aren't getting solved, then who people vote for would change significantly.

I mean seriously, if people in Kentucky would do the research, and put 2+2 together, I doubt they would be re-electing McConnell cycle after cycle. That guy is a political parasite and doesn't even appear liked at all in his own state, but they won't get rid of him because so many of them are far too apathetic and quite frankly, ignorant and maybe even flat out stupid.
