I think Sanders would win Massachusetts in that world.

The crazy thing is, just 4 years later, Trump wins East of the Mississippi  184-124!  While your West of the Mississippi map is virtually unchanged, at a 122-108 Trump victory.

After The Armageddon-1968 Election:

Nixon-207 EV's,    23,020,393      42.00%
HHH-153 EV's,      23,695,882     43.23%
Wallace-45 EV's,     8,081,944      14.75%

Let's say against all odds two huge asteroids hits both the USSR and America hard. USSR's damaged badly beyond repair and Russia is split in two between an habitable portion and one that no one can live in and the US loses access to the west coast and the midwest. Slowly overtime decades in the future the rust belt can become habitable again but it's mostly the east, south, and middle of the country left for a while.

The election of 1968 proved to be very rough in terms of morale for the country as while VP Humphrey ran away with the popular vote by far (which was a shock given the nightmare of a Democratic convention,) Nixon won the Electoral College but it took some negotiating. George Wallace become one of the most hated men in America and forever banned from the Democratic party thanks to his pre house-decision deal to give 1 state to Richard Nixon, Georgia, which was enough to make Nixon the winner. Humphrey got screwed and Tricky Dick is the President to follow John F Kennedy in a bit of twisted irony.

CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA ELECTION, 1961

✓ Lyndon Johnson (Liberal-Texas) 211 EV

Barry Goldwater (National Democrat-Arizona) 183 EV

The Centennial Election was perhaps the most dramatic and important events in the history of the nation. Unlike the CSA's Yankee neighbor, with their Republican and Democratic Labor parties, the CSA never had a stable two party system. The country was generally a dominant party system under the National Democrats who split from the Yankee's Democratic Party after the War of Secession. There was a Long interruption from the Populist Dictatorship era during the 1920s and 30s, but after its overthrow the bluebloods running the National Democratic Party regained their power and influence stifling those who would emulate the Yankee's business oriented meritocratic Republicans (the Confederate Republican Party). But soon a new force began to arise with the support of the long oppressed black population and white men who actually saw them as human beings. The Liberal party was seen as a fringe party of fruits in its early days, and later as a neo-populist party with a velvet fist according to Nat. Dem claims.

However as the Nat Dems continued with the tired tradition of patronage and crony politics in the 1950s, the Liberals, promising the restoration of some populist polices like the social safety net and racial tolerance, they began to rise from a blip on the radar to major threat. In 1961, the Liberals ran Lyndon Johnson, a tough and charismatic reformer very popular in the CSA's largest and most populous state. He needs little introduction. The National Democrats ran Barry Goldwater, who is remembered by history, perhaps unfairly, as a useful idiot for the Nat Dem aristocracy who Johnson threatened. Instead of the old trick of attacking black rights as a "white man's nation" issue, he claimed that the federal government enforcing racial equality would be a state's right's issue. Ironically these sort of arguments would work better in the USA than the CSA.

The election came down to Florida and Virginia. Goldwater needed to win Florida in order to have any path to victory, and he did. But his margins in Arizona were pathetic, and before his own home state could be called for him (it would take a week) Virginia - and the election - was called for the Liberal party for the first time in history.

Lyndon Johnson is remembered as an incredible president who redefined the Confederacy as a country for everyone who lived in it. The Liberals still idolize him as the second if not the single greatest man to be honored with the title of President, and the National Democratic party has turned from "he was a great man, but not a great president" to "ok he was a great president, I admit it, but the modern liberal party has turned away from true equality blah blah blah blah..."

Lyndon Johnson also redefined the CSA as viewed from the outside. No longer would this great nation be viewed as the bigoted and sometimes barbaric lesser cousin of its Yankee neighbor, aligned the French ultranationale regime against freedom and all that was good back in the 20s. By 1969, after Johnson had left office, the CSA would be invited as a full member of the Democratic Alliance and would sent soldiers to fight against imperialist regimes in the far east.

Shouldn't ME be part of MA? Also, VT is normally given as part of New York (though it was claimed by both NY and NH, and existed as an independent republic between 1777 and 1791).

United Republic of Dixie Presidential Election, 2016: (From 112ToWin.com)

Senate Pres. Pro Tem. Jefferson Sessions (Popular Democratic - Alabama)/Congressman Dave Brat (Popular Democratic - Virginia): 187 EVs, 62.0% PV
Fmr. Governor Martin O'Malley (Whig - Maryland)/Senator Tom Udall (Whig - New Mexico): 34 EVs, 34.0% PV
Congressman Ron Paul (Confederalist - Texas)/Fmr. Governor Gary Johnson (Confederalist - New Mexico): *1 EV, 3.5% PV
(Not pictured, Commonwealths of Sonora-Baja and Cuba.)
*Faithless Elector.

The Popular Democratic Party of the United Republic of Dixie (renamed from the Confederate States of America during President Tom E. Watson's Confederate Constitutional Convention of 1897) has won its third Presidential victory since 2004. (The 1998 Election went to the House due to the electoral tie between Senator Gore and Vice President Lott; The House saw a slim majority for the Popular Democrats, but Lott had become a hated figure while serving under President Perot.) President Pro Tem Jeff Sessions easily rode the coattails of successful President Mel Martinez, who basically continued the right-populist platform of Fmr. President Zell Miller despite his own moderate leanings. The economy was still booming, and voters were supportive of Sessions calls to continue the rise in border security and tariffs that are routinely popular with the Popular Democratic voter base. The only significant change in the electoral map is the narrow victory in Florida for Sessions against the steadfastly liberal Whig icon Martin O'Malley. Martinez lost his home state back in 2010 by a razor-thin margin due to Whig upswing with Hispanics, so this election reversed that upstate.

Once again, fringe candidate Ron Paul receives one faithless elector in his home state of Texas. Liberal outcry in the Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware areas has once again resumed, with the pro-secessionists once again flooding Dixie's Twitter world with the hash tag "NOVA-Exit" as the most prominent sign of dissent. Other areas besides North Virginia, such as Delaware, Maryland, and the city of Washington-Leeburg in Maryland have also seen some internet activity for succession, but the biggest calls remain around the "Southerner's Hollywood" section of Virginia. New Mexicans largely feel no reason to protest the election results despite its huge Hispanic population (many of whom are questioned to be illegal), despite the Whig VP nominee being from New Mexico, and probably because Populist bulwark Texas is located to its right.

Many Dixie voters report a positive view of the continuing Popular Democratic administration, so despite minor riots in NOVA-MD-DE areas, Dixie political stability remains high, especially when compared to the United States up north. Even 40 years after the restoration of elections, the left-wing Social Democratic Party continues to regularly crush the right-wing Union Party. (President Henry Wallace suspended much of the U.S. Constitution and Presidential elections in the United States after his ascension to the Presidency in 1945. Despite a huge boon from 1997 - 1989, the Union Party faltered to the SDP in the 1992 elections and has been unable to break the SDP's increasingly radical hold. The US's 2016 Election Results will determine whether or not this remains true.)

1968 United Republic of Dixie 1968 Presidential Election (93 EVs to Win)Sad

Fmr. Treasury Secretary Happy Chandler (PD - KY)/Senator George Smathers (PD - FL): 99 EVs, 45% PV
Senator Ralph Yarbourough (W - TX)/Chief Justice Ellis Arnall (W - GA): 45 EVs, 40% PV
Governor Lester Maddox (SN - GA)/Fmr. Senator Barry M. Goldwater (SN - AZ): 45 EVs, 13% PV

The Sixties were a chaotic time under Whig President Al Gore. Not only had the traditional Whig Establishment been fully replaced by the neoliberal faction that emerged during the Long Presidency. The economy was tanking, partially due to the ongoing stagflation, partially due to Gore's entry into the Indonesian War (This world's Vietnam), and in the minds of many Southerners, due to Gore's passage of several limited Civil Rights bills. The Populist Democrats, who lost in a landslide thanks to Senator Goldwater of Arizona, decided to seize the opportunity to run a moderate law and order candidate and repeat John Davis' "Return to Normalcy" from the 1920 Election.

That law and order candidate turned out to be Fmr. Presidents Coke Stevenson's and Estes Kefauver's Treasury Secretary, Happy Chandler of Kentucky. As the architect of the post-war economic boom after WWII and especially during and after the Korean War, Chandler enjoyed the image of a restorer. His time in charge of the finances of Dixie saw massive influx of Yankee and European immigration with minimal Southern immigration, along with the rise of mass consumerism and middle class prosperity. Chandler wisely ran on that. On the social front, Chandler did not call for a scale back of Civil Rights progress but called for a "hold" on it to allow Dixie to take progress slowly and in a more healthy manner. Most Southerners merely tolerated this measure, but it worked as Chandler won the nomination easily. A more radical faction, being led by Governor Lester Maddox of Georgia, ran the "Southern Nationalist" ticket as an ardent anti-integrationist and as even more economically populist than the regular Populist Democrats. Fmr. Senator Barry Goldwater, still adamant in his crusade against the gov't overreach of the Gore Civil and Voting Rights Act of 1965, joined Maddox's ticket basically on that issue.

Only the most radical of Populist Democrats defected from the more moderate platform. Maddox tied the electoral vote with the Whigs, but only because they won the Deep South by the slimmest of margins. Their margin did flip West Virginia to the Whigs, though. Chandler won by 5% of the PV and with just six of the EVs needed to prevent the Election from heading to the House. Enough voters preferred Chandler's moderate platform to the failed policies of the Whigs and the radical demands of the Southern Nationalists.
