Coal county is already long gone. Atlas needs to get out of the 90s.
^
I agree with you and Hillary completely, but this will sadly hurt her in crucial swing states like PA and OH.

No, my point was that coal country is already heavily Republican and will continue to trend that way regardless of some dumb soundbyte. There's only so much more water you can squeeze out of a rock.

You have to remember that turnout rates in the coal country are incredibly low. Hillary's anti-coal comments could inspire many of these people who have never voted before to turnout against her, especially considering the fact that Donald Trump's populist message is the perfect fit for these voters.

Would this comment really inspire anyone who didn't already vote after the black guy named Hussein Osama called them bitter clingers? Color me very skeptical.

Common-sense policy, but not a wise move. I don't think this is THAT bad, but I would have preferred she not say it.

Hillary may have just lost Ohio, along with West Virginia and Kentucky (I think Sanders was probably going to win them anyways).

I doubt it will matter in the primaries because Sanders isn't going to attack her over this.  He probably agrees.

He'd have the sense to word it very differently. Like "We need an infrastructure program in coal country to give unemployed coal miners jobs again".

Oh my god.  Hillary threw away not just the election tonight but every state and local-level race east of the Mississippi.  Democrats are so screwed by this out-of-context quote.

How was it out of context?  She obviously meant it, look at her grinning!  She then realized she effed up big time and awkwardly tried to backpedal.

We can now project that Bernie Sanders has won the West Virginia Democratic Primary.

I think you're underestimating the impact tbqh. I think Democrats just lost the entire country in a landslide due to this quote, and should probably immediately disband and form a new party.

Ok, why are you guys freaking out over this.  She is right.  These jobs need to be taken out, they are from the past and only holding that region of the country back.  Of course, the choice of words wasn't the best.

On the electoral significance of it, she already had lost WV, Eastern Ohio, Western KY and PA, in both the primary and general election, why pander to a dead industry.

I wonder if Sanders will be asked his opinion of those quotes?

Any suggestions that he disagrees with this? Carbon tax?

Maybe not the most politically correct way to frame things, but in reality, environmental regulations destroy coal jobs, and in this quote she is arguing for economic assistance for coal country. It's a lot more honest than pretending that the people who have had their lives destroyed by the collapse of coal just don't exist.

Besides, pandering to coal country doesn't work anyway. Just ask Alison Lundergan Grimes, Jack Conway, and Natalie Tennant. Hell, they even swung so far against Mark Warner, one of their former heroes, that you'd think he was a liberal hippie tree hugging EPA administrator. The D stands for death in coal country, and the trend is irreversible.

Well, the jobs are in the East.  Wyoming only accounts for about 10% of coal jobs.  There was a met coal boom  because of China that has now reversed to  cost many Appalachian jobs (no met coal in Wyoming).

http://www.vox.com/2016/2/22/11090878/us-coal-industry-falling-apart

More recently natural gas prices have dropped so low that Wyoming coal is getting hurt too, plus TX is generating a ridiculous amount of wind energy this winter, maybe an El Nino thing.

No need for that. The DNC will be quite an orderly affair. Perhaps you're projecting out of fear Willard the Mitt or some other establishment stooge is gonna steal the nomination from your guy? I'd be pretty nervous about that too!

Appalachian jobs (or their absense) are not likely to cost many Democrats an election (except at the level of state legislature or down) for the simple reason that Appalachians no longer have many Dems representing them. Hillary Clinton's plan has never included Kentucky or West Virginia, and by the time you start dealing with Pennsylvania and Ohio, coal jobs are not such a big thing anymore.

I agree, but many on Atlas (especially on 2016) have no comprehension of what's going on in the real world.  Of course, Trump has no basic knowledge either.  Really, Appalachian miners should go for retraining, because App coal can't compete with natural gas or Western or Ill Basin coal.  It is doomed in the marketplace.

Let's add the stage directions:

"[Spoken in harsh tones] We're going to put a lot of coal miners [hand across the neck either to indicate miners being struck off the employment rolls or being guillotined] and coal companies out of business. Right Tim [goofy smile at Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia]"
