If Trump emerges as the delegate leader but does not clinch the nomination, who emerges as the recipient of the free agent delegates of the remaining candidates? Besides Romney and Ryan who I think are not the best choices.

Here's a total shot in the dark that I haven't thought about until I read a thread on AH.com: Stanley McChrystal.

It's not going to be some random politician. It'll probably be one of the current candidates like Cruz, or a former candidate from this cycle like Walker.

Who on AH is talking up McChrystal? (Or was he in a TL?) ...That would have to be some serious 1800s style smoke filled room sh**t.

Romney is my guess.

1.) It can't be a current candidate.
2.) Who else is there?
3.) Who else would want it in these circumstances?

Lets say, the brokered convention is deadlocked, who do you think will emerge as compromise candidate?
Romney or Ryan or maybe anyone else?

Maybe Bob Dole should run. Bob Dole thinks Bob Dole should. Actually, Bob Dole just wants to hear Bob Dole talk about Bob Dole. Bob Dole!

Almost certainly a governor. Not Kasich, Bush or Christie though. Perry or Haley would be my guess. Maybe Walker, if he starts preparing early.

I think Walker's out entirely as an option given his performance before he dropped out.

I'd add Haslam to the list. Terry Branstead could be an interesting option too.

Haslam would be a decent pick.

I've always said Paul Ryan, but I think that he would be too establishment these days.

President Trump and Vice President Cruz. It wouldn't be in either candidate's interest to allow an establishment candidate. Having most of the marbles, they'd band together to shut out the GOP-e.  The GOP-e would not have any power to stop them unless they force a change to Rule 40(b).

It seems hard for me to envision someone not in the race right now being successfully drafted. As such, it seems very logical that the delegates will ultimately support Cruz.

There's no mythical figure who could just parachute in at the convention and unify the party. They could nominate Jesus and Trump's supporters would demand that he be deported.

If Kasich wins OH and his performances greatly improve between now and the convention, I could see him becoming the nominee. Otherwise, if the GOP would rather lose one election than lose the party, I think Cruz will get the nomination.

Agreed. If Kasich picks up steam and manages to capture delegates in the west, he may end up with enough support to get the nomination at a contested convention. The alternative is not a pretty thought, so I'm gonna go with Governor Kasich.

While possible, it is not very probable that the choice would be an outsider. I also think that a non-current candidate choice would automatically trigger a Trump third party run.

The only two who are in the race now, and who could realistically be considered are Cruz and Kasich.
