I don't know much about him.  He would probably be unacceptable to people like me, I would guess, though?

Honestly, Obama could nominate Jesus Christ himself, and a good percentage of Republicans could still try to get him rejected.

So is the fact that Garland is old part of the calculation here?  A few months from now, if Clinton is leading general election matchups by double digits and it looks like the GOP stands a good chance of losing the Senate, then having an older nominee makes at least some of the Senate Republicans more likely to buckle, since they figure that a President Hillary Clinton with a Democratic Senate would yield a Supreme Court Justice who's further to the left, and young enough to serve an additional 15 years?  So they give in and approve Garland, since the alternative is worse?

They can't do that without pissing off their base and making it look like they're caving to Obama, which is why this is so brilliant.

I have to applaud Obama here. This nominee is not a stand in to make a political statement, this nominee is very qualified, it is not someone who will legislate the far left agenda from the bench, and he has received praise from both political parties. Best of luck to Garland in the confirmation process.

I'm happy with this pick. Obama obviously was not going to nominate a conservative to the Court, but this is probably the best option for us Republicans.

Why?Huh? Sri was a much younger, and much more, ahem, bipartisan choice that would have made the Republicans look even more extreme for the election this fall.

Because Obama is doubtful he can win this nomination fight. If he nominated Sri, Sri might have been damaged during the hearings, leaving no room for a future promotion.

If the democrats succeed in November, Sri can get the nomination to replace RBG. This pick is about, "cmon, how can you say no to this guy."

And yet, probably a dead man walking.  He might need to endorse Clinton just so he can cling to some hope of hanging on to his seat.

^^ Kirk endorsing Clinton would depress turnout down state, leading to his defeat.

Is there any reason for Republicans to oppose him either than the fact that he isn't an extreme right winger or because they all hate Obama? Curious.

Kirk is gone anyways, no way Obama's homestate will stand for this obstruction, it will doom Dold chances as well.

CLINTON will likely renominate Garland, long line of DemJews on SCOTUS, except for Sotomayor and the GOP. Just like its typical in unlikely event, Trump will nominate a Catholic.

Dems are smart to pick Garland of his Hebrew ancestory. The GOP already have problems with Clinton and middle aged women, it will only enhance that.

For the four votes they need, Democrats should go after Collins, Kirk, Murkowski, and another moderate in danger of losing reelection (Ayotte? Portman?)

They need to get him through the Judiciary Committee first.

The US Senate's Judiciary Committee, which Justice Garland will need a majority of to even go before the Senate Floor:

 Republicans (11)
•Chuck Grassley, Iowa, Chair
•Orrin Hatch, Utah
•Jeff Sessions, Alabama
•Lindsey Graham, South Carolina
•John Cornyn, Texas
•Mike Lee, Utah
•Ted Cruz, Texas
•Jeff Flake, Arizona
•David Vitter, Louisiana
•David Perdue, Georgia
•Thom Tillis, North Carolina

Democrats (9)
•Patrick Leahy, Vermont, Ranking Member
•Dianne Feinstein, California
•Chuck Schumer, New York
•Dick Durbin, Illinois
•Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island
•Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota
•Al Franken, Minnesota
•Chris Coons, Delaware
•Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut

So we need at least 2 of those Republicans to vote to proceed to the Senate Floor.

It's our turn and about time we had a Conservative Protestant voice on th court.

Oh boy, that's a dangerous way of thinking. Setting aside that for much of American history the court was dominated by conservative Protestants, religious identity is hardly a good benchmark for a SCOTUS justice.

Garland was arguably the most qualified person who could possibly have been nominated.
