If Bernie Sanders wants to remain competitive, can he sweep Western states against Hillary Clinton?

He's already lost Nevada, so it wouldn't be a sweep.

Can he? Yes. Is it likely? Eh, not really, Clinton has some states like AZ and CA that she's favoured in. Would it make a difference anyway? Almost certainly not. To win, Sanders needs a titanic shift across the board.

He can, but Hillary's delegate lead is too big to overcome at this point.

He lost Nevada, he will lose Arizona, New Mexico and California, but other than that of course he will.

Nevada is in the West.

Excluding that, it's possible. But there is no "competitive" any more. It's just about how many delegates Hillary wins by.

He'll win Washington, because it's a caucus and Oregon just because it's liberal. Clinton will carry California.

Possibly.

His chances are best in the Northwest, Utah, Hawaii and the remaining prairie states, can't see him winning border states though.

Alaska and the Mexican Border States, not a chance.

If we are defining 'west' to be every state on or west of the Continental Divide, then Sanders has already won CO and Hillary has won NV. So he can't win all of 'the west'.

However, Sanders should probably win the remaining mountain west and pacific northwest (MT, ID, WY, UT, OR and WA), while Clinton wins the southwest (NM and AZ) along with CA. Essentially the same breakdown as Obama and Clinton in 2008.

If you are including AK and HI, Sander will probably win those caucuses as well (jut like Obama in 2008).

He's not winning the Southwest, but he'll win the Northwest (AK, WA, OR, ID, MT, UT, and WY) quite easily.

He can, not that it'll make a difference at this point. Still, I'll certainly take it on principle if it happens.

Even if Sanders sweeps the western states, it still will be very difficult to overcome Clinton's surplus from states that have already voted.

Don't take me wrong: I hope Sanders can still make a good performance and win as many contests as possible, but my hopes for him upseting Clinton for the nomination are at best very small.
