Huntsman is about as Mormon as Bernie Sanders is Jewish. He's a "cultural Mormon". His positions aren't really in line with the power structure of the Utah GOP either. I don't think anyone in the establishment cares about his China ambassadorship, that's something the base gets angry about.

Huntsman is basically a cultural Mormon, and barely considers himself Mormon at all. Romney is the more traditional believing Mormon, and plus didn't work for Obama, so Mormons tend to like Romney better.

Plus Romney was the first Mormon to close anywhere close to winning the presidency, he's basically our JFK.
