Republican-Mitt Romney/Ron Paul
Democrat-Brad Henry/Immy (are there any other Democrats in Idaho?)
Independent-Anthony Williams/Trent Lott (now wouldn't be an interesting ticket)

Well let me take a shot at it. Maybe the 1860 election if it happened in 2004 with no Constitutional Union Party in the race.

Why would Powell do well in the South?

I would have thought it should be more like Haley Barbour or someone like that.

Barbour wouldn't win DC.

I realize it's implausible, but I was envisioning Powell getting a huge black turnout, plus enough whites to win the South. Freudenthal, coming from a nearly all-white state, probably wouldn't have a tremendous amount of appeal to blacks compared to the average Democrat.

I suppose it's as good as anything, given how ridiculously implausible the scenario is.

I can't imagine an independent candidate who wins Mississippi and DC.

The Mormon triangle states vote simular since 1948, why did they split in this scenario?

And who is the Democrat who carries Vermont, Kentucky and Idaho, but does not win in a landslide?

In other words: I really can't think of a scenario in the days, let's say, after WWII which makes that map possible.

This would almost be possible if it weren't for that fact and Texas.  With those two going the way they are, however... no.
