Real or not, Cruz's response to this and his allegations that it's Trump's fault have given this story legitimacy and now the media is jumping on it. Cruz might implode this Easter weekend (where families are all getting together to talk and reflect on their faith) when he should have not given this the time of day. This might have been a big mistake.
Denying the story as anything other than tabloid trash put the story on the front page of the New York tabloids.

Blaming Trump has forwarded the frenzy to legit papers like the Washington Post. Pretty dumb news on Cruz's part -- even if he denies it -- for exactly the reason you stated. It's like he didn't learn from Rubio's mistakes.

I disagree. As long as the allegations are false, this is the best way to deal with it.  Link it to Trump immediately and unequivocally.

The media has been presenting this as part of the Trump vs. Cruz fight of the last week.  Unless there's more evidence, it looks like Cruz has successfully linked this to Trump's sleazy tactics.

Sex scandals like this usually do not end well against the person that is attacked. It will push Cruz's favorables down whether there is one iota of truth to the rumors. Going nuclear by blaming Trump will get this story into the mainstream press. Not sure that is the right tact to take.

I was also surprised that Cruz gave this story legitimacy. While his core supporters may believe him and cheer the anti-bullying position, for the rest of the electorate it just introduces a new seed of doubt. He should have left it alone, especially over an Easter weekend. If this was a one on one between Trump and him, the action may have made sense. This way, he is just slinging mud with Trump, while voters still have a third choice - Kasich.

And since we are in the gutter, I can't overlook that the publisher's name (David Pecker) pretty accurately describes the National Enquirer's focus in this case.

This is old school Atwater stuff.  What's interesting is this was already out there for awhile now Marco had it ready to go if it vame to him vs cruz.   I guess its why the establishment isnt high on cruz in a GE and is only using him to get a contested convention.

This is nothing but blatant libel by trump to destroy Cruz. The Enquirer is in bed with Trump and thus their article has no merit.

Ted does seem like the kind of guy whose primary motivation for power is to be able to f*** all the girls out of his league that wouldn't give him the time of day in high school and college.  It would definitely be in character.

Reaching new heights in intellectual discussion of politicall events in the modern world.

Yeah, this is pretty clearly someone from team Rubio's hit squad cashing in.
The $500k from Cruz to Carly when they were ostensibly running against each other leads me to believe at least that part of the story.  We never did get an explanation for that.  It came from a Cruz Super PAC, so may be indicative of communication between the two as well.

Good catch. That was published around the time that Rubio's zipper problems were hinted to leak soon, too. Maybe the Rubio camp threw this out there as a direct threat.

Has anyone brought up him paying off Carly for hush money yet?

That involved his SuperPAC that he can't legally coordinate with, so of course he'll deny that.

One thing you have to consider is that with the John Edwards thing it wasn't out there while he was actually running of course he wasn't going to win and was basically the O'malley of that primary but just think if he had been 1st for 2nd place.

Gawker just got the smackdown laid on them for this kind of stuff so I'd think national inquire would really have some evidence.

If true.. My god don't mess with Donald J Trump.   Even if he loses to Hillary in the GE I'm enjoying every bit of watching him completely take apart the establishment.

Not sure if this has been posted in the thread yet, but Amanda Carpenter was confronted live on air on CNN about the accusation of an affair with Cruz, before CNN had reported on the Enquirer story:

Unless a pseudonym, it is mere coincidence.

Face it: if you want the biggest demographic in American voters based upon what people read, then the National Enquirer, infamous for its low level of intellectual quality, is ideal. Its readers have little use for subtlety or style, as might readers of more 'elegant' media. The language is put at a grade-school level; its readers like its 'news' easily digested.

Out of all the suspects, I think Carpenter's case is probably the most likely to be true.
