No, there used to be a lot of Senate Democrats like Nelson.  Of course, there used to be a lot more Democrats in the Senate.  Hmmmm...

He's far more of a DINO than any Republican is a RINO. He's got tons of terrible votes, Bankruptcy, Condi, Gonzales, Iraq war, and so on....

A lot of Democrats voted for those things.

Great, so we have a lot of DINOs. Most voted against the Bankruptcy bill and all but a few voted against Gonzales, though.

No. He's a true patriot, and there need to be more Democrats like him.

I agree with that. Smiley

He's a top notch Senator.

I looked him up, and I can't see why he'd be a DINO.  He's one of the more conservative Democrats, sure, but unless he's actively attacking his own party as Zell Miller was, I can't see how he's a DINO.

He's the most conservative Democrat in the Senate. We'll take what we can get out of a state like Nebraska.

Well, of course he's much more liberal than anyone with a 96 ACU rating (higher than Frist or Allen).

Nelson is fairly moderate because he, well, has no choice.  If he voted like Ted kennedy or John kerry, there is no way the folks of Nebraska would vote for him.

I actually tend to like most of the Senators who have bucked the trend and got elected in states that likely should not have won.

Snowe and Collins from Maine, Chaffee, Smith on the GOP side, Nelson, Landreau, Pryor, etc on the Dem side... I think having to really fight to politically survive makes them better representatives...

You would think that the Democrats would be smarter than to feed on their own. Nelson isn't nearly as liberal as some Senators, but as the Vorlon just pointed out; if he were he wouldn't be a Senator in the state of Nebraska. The Democrats should thank their lucky stars they have Nelson.

The topic is Ben Nelson of Nebraska, not Bill Nelson of Florida.

He's conservative, but he's no Zell Miller. He still votes with us a little more than half of the time (like Lincoln Chafee does with the Republicans).

Not like it mattered, only 34 votes stop that.

I'd agree with that. Nelson is the kind of Democrat, who can actually win in "red"/conservative states - and if the Democrats are serious about regaining the Senate, then they are going to have to field candidates of a similar moderate ideological profile (and if it's needs to be a conservative moderate than so be it)

So, no he is not a DINO! He's a Nebraska Democrat. I don't expect liberals to be very strong on the ground there
