Bush State Vote

Bush received 35,319,726 votes in the Bush states to Kerry's 26,548,415.

That comes out to Bush 57.09%, Kerry 42.91%.

Actually, if you include ALL votes cast (not just Bush and Kerry), Bush got approximately  55.57%

You didn't read the poll question.

What percentage of the two-party vote did George W. Bush receive in the states he won in the 2004 presidential election?

I noticed this fact after the last election too. Gore (and Kerry this time) won states by relativelty narrow margins, with only DC, NY, RI and last year DC & MA giving the Democrats over 60%. Bush seemed to win a lot of states with over 60%, he had few narrow victories. This of course was the reason for his electoral college success in 2000.

One of my biggest hopes of 2004 was for Connecticut to give Kerry over 60%, but that ended up being another dissapointment in an election with many.

Kerry ran better than Gore in the most northern states, and worse than Gore in the NYC area. It looks about the same once you weight for state size.

In almost all of the states where Kerry increased on Gore's margins, you'll need to factor in Nader.  Gore vs Bush without Nader would likely be a bigger difference than Kerry vs Bush.
