My Alma Mater is renaming it's law school after Justice Antonin Scalia.

I personally have very mixed feelings about it.

JW everyone else here thinks.

Great news. Scalia was a Supreme Court Justice for like 30 years, he is by far one of the most influential jurists ever in the U.S. It is very fitting to honor such a man, I mean we do have Brandeis after all. And they waited until Scalia died so there really is nothing improper, other than "blah blah gays blah blah I'm liberal."

This is awful.  Naming the George Mason law school after a Georgetown alum?  This had better be an April Fool's joke.

Indeed, for longevity on the Court and influence on historic decisions, he's nearly as historic a figure as Roger Taney (28 years as chief justice) and his rulings and place in history will be similarly reviewed.

It's great that the school is getting $20m in exchange for the renaming, however they are setting themselves up for an ugly debate in the future when students lobby to have his name removed as they protest now against monuments honoring former slaveholders or Confederate leaders.

One of the worst justices the Supreme Court has ever seen. He helped roll back the clock and did a lot of destruction to America with his rulings.

Lol.

I honestly have no problem with this. Guys, its not like this is the most prestigious law school like Harvard or Princeton. It's not like this is a liberal school like Berkeley, or even his alma mater Georgetown for that matter! This is George Mason, a mid-tier and one of the most conservative law schools. If they want to name it after Scalia then so be it. It will probably be the last you hear about it. Besides, that acronym mistake is hilarious.

It's nice to see an American university naming something after someone who isn't a major donor for a change.

Oh, wait a second:

Yeah there are a few feathers ruffled about confderate leaders but I doubt it's going to be a nuclear push to remove their names, or to have Scalia's name removed somewhere down the line.

I'm genuinely not clear on what your point is. A quid pro quo is not a gift. It is a transaction. Why should what is effectively buying the naming rights to a law school qualify as a charitable donation?
So I assume that you consider NPR tote bags to be commercial transactions rather than recognition for a gift?

Because without it the building wouldn't have been built (or would have taken a lot of money from some place else that, in theory, needs it).

yep

I guess I don't see what the big deal is.  Does anybody even care about names on things like this (other than teh college kids that see everything as a grave injustice)?
