The last four years have been a long slog for incumbent president Pete du Pont. Major planks of the president's fiscal agenda have been staunchly opposed by the congressional Democrats and certain elements of his own party. Constrained by the loss of the Senate in the '86 midterms, du Pont has been forced by necessity to focus his energies on trade and foreign policy.

In '87, president du Pont and prime minister Mulroney signed the historic Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement, eliminating significant trade barriers with America's northern neighbour. Du Pont hopes to sign a broader, continent-wide FTA with both Canada and Mexico if re-elected. The president, influenced by a number of prominent neoconservatives in his cabinet, has pursued an aggressively interventionist foreign policy. In response to the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombings, president du Pont ordered not only retaliatory air strikes, but a full occupation force to be deployed to Libya. The coastal population centres of the country remain under U.S. occupation but Colonel Gaddafi and his forces continue to fight a vicious guerilla war in the south. Under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev, a weakened Soviet Union has undertaken significant liberalizing reforms, but president du Pont has demonstrated little interest in Detente

Challenging the president on the right (well, depending on your perspective) is the well-known columnist, presidential speechwriter, and Nixon-Ford insider, Patrick J. Buchanan. "The president has betrayed the American worker, he's failed to defend our border, and he's led us into a hopeless North African quagmire." If elected, Buchanan has pledged to undo du Pont's FTAs, repeal the 1986 Amnesty bill, and to immediately withdraw all American troops from Libya.

The Democratic party, meanwhile, hopes to prevent a third consecutive Republican administration.

Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA) has long been spoken of as a presidential contender. A known moderate with two decades of public service under his belt, many believe Nunn is the man best suited to build a winning coalition in November. Nunn strikes a liberal note on abortion, immigration, the environment, gun control, and affirmative action, but has broken with his party by supporting a balanced budget amendment, the death penalty, and school prayer.

Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro (D-NY) represents the liberal northern faction of the Democratic party. Ferraro's platform includes comprehensive Detente with the USSR, expanded infrastructure spending, and to draft and ratify a new equal rights amendment. Ferraro has made waves as the first female candidate for a major party since Shirley Chisholm in 1972.

Finally, Businessman Lee Iacocca has thrown his hat into the ring. Iacocca, well-known for saving the Chrysler automobile company from bankruptcy, believes that he can do the same for the nation. "The president's disastrous trade and labour policies and warmongering threaten to plunge this country into bankruptcy. We turned things around in Detroit with real leadership and we'll do the same in Washington D.C."

Two days.

Nunn!

His "school prayer" is iffy, though. Is that based on the principle's religion?
