Yep, it's Spitzer. He'll be the Obama of 2006.

You mean he'll win in a landslide and receive national attention as a new rising star? I totally agree!

Do any of you who think he's so overrated really dispute that he is basically already governor-elect now? Come on.

Hillary Clinton
Barrack Obama
Eliot Spitzer

I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of anyone else.

Obama won a landslide because of a lack of credible opponents in a Democratic state.  Same is true of Spitzer.

I assume you mean will win. Anyways, since when does 12 year incumbent governor not qualify as credible?

When did I say he wasn't likely to win? I do believe he'll win easily. I do believe he'll be a rising star. However, there's more to it. Obama was a rising star and now he's done. You don't hear about Obama anymore. People don't care. So, yes, he'll be the next Obama.

Spitzer hasn't even began to be recognized by the public yet.  He is certianly not overated.  His poll numbers look very good, also.

I'd say Condi Rice.

New Yorkers love him. He is starting to get a big name for fighting corporate corruption. We need more politicians like him.

Why?  Is it just because he "just so happened to be there"?  Winston Churchill, FDR, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington "just so happened to be there" as well.  Are they overrated?

Yeah, because Rudy just happened to be here, but some Republicans seem to think of him as a demigod, where he has no exprience about the local level and a crapload of scandals that will hurt his election chances.

Rudy has a Hell of a lot more expirience as mayor of New York than some Senators and governors do.

New York City (pop) 8,158,000

Arkansas (pop) 2,673,400

Massachusetts (pop) 6,349,097

See where I am going with this?

In foreign countries, Mayors are given great credibility.  In Mexico, for example, Mexico City's Mayor is in line to be the next President.  Chirac was Mayor of Paris before becoming President of France.  We strangely, and wrongly, discredit Mayors.  As Super pointed out, New York City has more people than Arkansas.

As for Pataki being or not being a credible opponent, given his wild unpopularity, and the strong chance he won't run at all, I think jfern's comments are a bit ludicrous.

That's true but having experience dealing with state, and especially national-level issues are much importnat as president than local issues.

The mayor of New York is basically a governor.  On day-to-day affairs, the mayor acts almost completely independently of the state.  This was an arrangment that was worked out a long time ago.  He has the profile of any governor as well.  If something goes wrong there, the White House does not call the governor.  When state governors need to work out a deal with New York City, they don't bother to call the governor.  It is the only city in the country where city government is higher profile than what is going on throughout the state.
