This is from the Nixon tapes.

So they're saying the CIA bugged him, or what? Where did you get the specific claims about his campaign airplane and campaign headquarters.

I'm certainly no fan of LBJ either as you all know.

What most people forget though is its not the burglarythat brought Nixon down, but the fact he tried to cover it up. Much like teh constant statement from Republicans that Clinton was not impeached for getting a blowjob, but for lying.

The CIA was ordered to bug Goldwater by LBJ. The FBI was asked to but they refused to since, "Goldwater is not an enemy of the state". If you google search 'Goldwater, bugged' you will find a lot of information on the subject.

Why do these tapes exist in the first place? That system should be dismantled, if it still exists.

Why do these tapes exist in the first place? That system should be dismantled, if it still exists.

It was dismantled as soon as its existence was publicly revealed, in July 1973.

LBJ had a taping system that was manually controlled, so he could eliminate the juicy portions of conversations.  Nixon's system was voice activated, so they contained everything.  Any president who taped his conversations after Nixon would have to be crazy.  Presidents now can't even keep a diary.

LBJ certainly covered up a lot of shenanigans, but the level of disclosure was never as high, and the cover-ups were never penetrated.  LBJ was just as crooked as Nixon, probably more so.  JFK was also engaged in the same type of stuff, breakins, wiretaps, etc.  But the valiant press of that era was very selective in the politicians it pursued.

Next question-why shouldn't there be official recordings of everything that goes on in the white house, but not released until after a President's term is over or there is a court order for release?

He probably would have been arrested for destruction of evidence.

All he'd have to do is insist they never existed. Were they numbered? He could just destroy the relevant ones.

What if Congress decides to give out subpoenas and you lie there insisting the tapes never existed? Or you admit there were tapes except you destroyed them? Not very good result either way...

Actually destroying the tapes would have been a true crime. Destruction of evidence.

Both were bad-- but bugging a campaign airplane got my vote.  Johnson was a very mean man, and somewhat of a hack, and the way he wrongly framed Goldwater as someone who wants to unleash nuclear weapons on the people was sickening.  But I have a very hard time believing that Hubert Humphrey authorized any wrongdoings against Nixon in '68, as Nixon had occasionally implied.

By the way, there was more to Watergate than the third rate burglary.  I've always been most troubled by fake pamphlets and tricks that occured that actually occured at campaigns, not ones in party headquarters.  For example, I seem to remember reading about pamphlets supposedly from the McGovern camp accusing Humphrey and Muskie of illicit sexual conduct, when they were actually done by Nixon's team!  Disgusting!

No more worse then the ads run by the LBJ campaign in 64.

I mentioned those when I talked about Goldwater unleashing nuclear weapons.  Don't compare Nixon to LBJ to make him look better; the fact is, Nixon did some dirty stuff, and it was very wrong.

What hypocrisy?

You slam Nixon for some meaningless burglary yet you are completely silent about the dirty tricks LBJ used. Is bugging your opponents airplane wrong?

Some meaningless burglary? How come Nixon was pardoned? What happened to that 18 1/2 minutes of the tape? Why were there all of thosse talks about Cubans? No, the story is far more complicated than that.

And anyways, one thing that hardly anyone knows is that if Nixon hadn't sabatoged the peace talks, the Vietnam war would have ended October 31st, 1968. Instead he made the war continue just to help his curropt ass in that election.

I remember that when Johnson made an announcement on Vietnam on October 31st, Humphrey went up in the polls.  How could Nixon have sabotaged them?

You'd actually have to produce any sort of evidence.

As for the poll questions (if it's true), the only reasonable option - both are horrible crimes - is missing.
