"Solid South" Democrat who didn't switch over for good until Bush in 2004.

Potential voting record:
1972 - McGovern
1976 - Carter
1980 - Carter

1984 - Reagan
1988 - Bush
(but a swing voter overall)
1992 - Clinton
1996 - Clinton
2000 - Gore
(again a swing voter)
2004 - Bush
2008 - McCain (Huckabee in primary)
2012 - Romney (Gingrich in primary)
2016 - Cruz

2004: George W. Bush

This thread references counties where Obama did worse than McGovern and thus would be a good starting point: https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=228728.0

Unfortunately a full list wasn't provided.

The problem with the idea that the Deep South is a major source of these voters is that McGovern did worse with whites in the Deep South than at least every Dem nominee from 1976-2004, and maybe even worse than Obama, depending on how bad black turnout was in 1972 (it was certainly quite low in the South that year).

Perhaps, though McGovern only won one county in the coalfield of West Virginia. Of course, that's one more than Obama won in the state....

He also carried a handful of counties in Eastern Kentucky.

MormDem's mention of inland Northern California in that thread gives some intriguing possibilities.
