This is incredible. Now they essentially need to convict you of a crime to keep your things. Admittedly this is far more than I would have expected from the legislature. For a state as large as Florida, this is good news and gives hope for more progress on this issue throughout the country.

That's the gist, but the article also lists the other various provisions.

Great news.  The asset forfeiture laws are so funking ridiculous.  How did that sh**t pass the courts in the first place?  I get that it's to "fight the drug war" (which we mostly agree is a horrible thing), but if the person with the cash has no other connections to drugs than a wad of cash, well it seems pretty stupid to take his cash then.  It's nothing more than highway robbery by somebody with a badge.

Your first mistake was believing that American courts actually do anything good ever.

This is excellent news, but am I the only one who is kind of surprised this happened in Florida of all places?  In addition to being dominated by Republicans at the state level, they're a pretty fiercely pro-death penalty state where the Republican line on "law and order" issues has generally been pretty effective.

Nope. I'm very surprised myself. They really went further than most states would at this point in time, which is surprising for a state like Florida, dominated by a party known for its tough-on-crime positions.

So now we have almost 20 million more people protected from legalized theft. Such great news Smiley

Great news. More states should follow this example.
