Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

FF. I like his style, and I look forward to seeing where he goes as a poster from here. (It helps that I think the genre after which he's named is collectively one of the best bodies of writing America has produced.)

No clue who this is, but I definitely agree on southern gothic literature. American literature is pretty miserable outside of the South, something that Tocqueville actually commented on...extensively.

Definitely an FF so far.  He also seems pretty low-key, which is a plus in my book.

As a Masshole I'm honor-bound to argue that between Tocqueville's time and Faulkner's New England produced some good stuff.

Please don't try to laud Ralph Waldo Emerson. Wink

Does Edith Wharton count as a New Englander?

I'm thinking of Hawthorne and, to the extent that he spent a lot of time in Massachusetts, Melville. Not a fan of the Transcendentalists.

Wharton is Homo atlanticus (like Henry James, John Singer Sargent on the visual-arts side of things, et cetera) but spent enough time in Rhode Island (as a child) and Massachusetts (as an adult) that we count her for certain purposes, yeah. She counts if Melville counts.

I'd also add Emily Dickinson and (some of) Shirley Jackson as great New England writers, although if we're restricting ourselves to prose Dickinson obviously doesn't count.

Man, I was really on board with all of your literary tastes before Emily Dickinson came up. I do remember Tocqueville reserved the majority of his screed against American poetry.

Yeah, Wharton never struck me as a New Englander though I think that one book with the sled accident was set in Massachusetts.

That being said, how long does one have to live in New England to count? I'm wondering if I get to count.

I lived in Amherst for years. I'm obligated. Wink

What kind of poetry do you like?

Frankly, I don't care for Ethan Frome. There's a whole laundry list of reasons, mostly personal, why not.

I'd just say 'long enough to get a feel for the place', which is different for every person. That's why I'd say Jackson definitely counts, Melville probably counts, Wharton sometimes count, and Twain doesn't count. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court just feels 'off'.

Seems a lot like Miles, who is also an FF. Although I haven't been around long enough to know him as well as most on here.

Sadly, Miles turned into a Drumpf supporter.

Isn't that a TV series where Gary Cole plays the devil or something?

Young Goodman Brown is, I believe strongly, the most important American short story.
