"alt right" usually refers to people concerned with pro-White identity politics, it started on 4chan and a lot of them do now support Trump.

Never heard anyone call SJWs the "alt left". Honestly, as much as SJWs freak out when you say SJW, it probably is the best term for them. Since everyone automatically knows what it means. I guess intersectionalists would be most neutral thing to call them. Or identitarians.

Folks - As far as I can tell, this trend was actually started by Bill Clinton and DLC types in their desperate attempt to win over the south. Even though it never worked, it just become standard operating procedure for the left in general and they've never stopped. I agree it's annoying as hell.

Bodies - I only ever heard this in discussions of BLM and police brutality "they want to kill Black bodies!" I'm fairly sure it's just an attempt to make White people feel uncomfortable. Not being cynical, I think that's the actual intended reason. If you ask them, they would probably admit it.

Individual - Haven't noticed this.

Member of the "x" community - This is just the definition of politically correct nonsense. By which I mean, saying "Hispanic person" is not incorrect but it's not "politically correct" either. It's supposedly offensive to "define someone by their race before you define them as a person".

I always thought bodies somehow stems from the Foucauldian insistence on the embodied nature of oppression - "docile bodies" etc, though totally bastardised. I've seen it a fair bit in academia. Sounds totally gross and dehumanising when divorced from that context though.

That's definitely what it is but it's typically used with absolutely no regard for how it sounds in a sentence.

Welcome to the left in 2016. We've all read think pieces where the word "privilege" is just inserted willy nilly to make it sound more zeitgeist-y.

wouldn't be caught dead in the same room as the other types of white people who use it.

Shucks, I'm probably the other type of white people.

They can't have that word. It's OUR word! This is cultural appropriation.

As a Southerner, I agree.

Never heard anyone call SJWs the "alt left".

They have in common obsession with identity politics that even a bunch of old-school New Lefties consider inordinate, and a penchant for congregating in a particular sort of online space. I think the snowclone is apt.

Follow up on this thread. "Alt left" has become a term people use now. But they're actually using it to mean the opposite of what the OP used it to mean. "Alt left" is the new term for Berniebro brocialist dudebros bros/people like me.

SJW is still probably the most concise term for SJWs.

I googled "alt-left" out of morbid curiosity and this came up.  It sounds pretty horrifying.  Thank God I don't actually know anyone with those views.

EDIT: Oh wait, Cory exists.

That's my impression; it seems to have a lot in common with Strasserism.

As a white Midwesterner from the archaic time of the mid 20th Century, we often used "folks" to mean parents. For example I might have said, "Let's go over to my folks' house for a snack."

Yeah, I mentioned earlier in this thread that some of the people I know still do that.

I always thought freepcrusher would be a good example of "alt-left" if defined as a liberal version of the alt right.

Hash and Oakvale probably have a better memory for this stuff than I do, so you can ask them for details. You can also find some of his greatest hits in the IRC compilations Hash did a while back, here and here.

The term "alt left" has evolved even more. As I said, originally it was used as an insult against BernieBros, calling them racist for not being intersectional enough. For a minute, it was picked up by actual left-wing racists, like the one in the linked article. That doesn't seem to have caught on though. Now the term seems to be used just to mean "people on the left who make memes" after the internet culture website The Daily Dot ran an article about left-wing Facebook meme pages and called them all the alt left. The article was actually horrible as it lumped together a bunch of groups who hate each other: BernieBros (they interviewed one of the guys from Chapo Trap House for the article and he seems to like applying the term to himself), generic SJWs like the guy who runs the Cabbage Cat/Lettuce Dog pages, and the (ironic?) Stalin worshiping tankies who admin various Weird Facebook groups. Even though the article was bad, the publication is popular, so their ad hoc definition seems to be becoming the dominant one as a result.

Good question.

Although the alt right is protectionist and generally hostile to finance capitalism, I would not say it uniformly anti-capitalist. Some alt rightists are indeed basically White nationalist social democrats. Many more though are just isolationist libertarians who believe that only a "high trust" society (ie, White people, not savage minorities) could maintain such a society.

Also, as someone else pointed out, the person who wrote that article appears to standard Western style social liberal on issues of gays and secularism. Again, those views are common on the alt right but they are not universal. Many more alt rightists constantly complain about "degeneracy" (gay marriage, feminism).

It seems that they range on social issues from "leave and let live" (a lot of guys at small western public university fraternities are like this) to something out of "the endarkenment" (mostly lonely upper-middle class  men in scientific fields  who claim modernity has robbed them of a love life). It seems His Majesty Himself splits the difference as well as many other Middle-Aged self-styled PUAs have who claim that they are "Democrats with "partying" and Republican on everything else" and are against abortion, claiming its "really unfair" but don't really care about it and are willing "to make a deal about it".

The "High Trust Society" people just seems like they are from a Santorum, Brownback, or maybe even a Cruz speech. "Only Capitalism works but that only works when people are "good"".

"Folx" really bugs me. There's no reason to abbreviate "folks." Some of my friends and I use "gux" instead of "guys" as a joke.

I have also seen "yt" being used. Obviously, that's in reference to white people, but is it pronounced "white" (like the word) or "why-tee" (like the letters)?

I've never heard of the term "folx" or saying bodies instead of people.  Am I not around the far left enough?
