What if Reagan had managed to defeat President Ford in 76 and secure the nomination, could he have defeated Carter in the General Election? Discuss with maps

No, he would have lost. The Gipper was seen as too right-wing before 1980. He would have outperformed Ford in the south, but underperformed heavily in the north.

In 1980, Ford runs again under a "I told you so" slogan and defeats Carter pretty substantially.

Former Governor James E. Carter (D-GA)/Senator Walter Mondale (D-MN): 321 EV. (51.22%)
Former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/Senator Richard Schweiker (R-PA): 217 EV. (47.15%)

This result would probably be better for America.
