Most of them are Democrats, they just don't like labels, so they choose "independent" to feel better about that despite voting exactly the same way.

Personally, while a strong Sanders supporter (and someone who considers himself an independent party-wise), I would still vote for Hillary come November, because, well, whatever my misgivings about her are, I'm just not keen on helping electing a Republican President just because my preferred candidate did not prevail.
