My mom's fluent in Russian, but I know barely a couple of words. I'm resolved to start learning it one day, though, probably when I'm finished with Farsi.

Learned enough to speak to a six year old back some friends of mine adopted kids, but they learned English really fast....haven't needed it since.

Yes, I am a Jew with Russian ancestry. I used to be much more fluent, but I still can hold a general convo easily.

I never knew how to read or write in russian, though

Like every Pole in primary/secondary/high school. This is genetic.
I currently have B1 level but I easily forgot words in Russian or replaces them with Polish one or even some strange mixtures.

Within the past six months, I've finally learned the alphabet.

But that's as far as I've gotten.  I can't even count in Russian.

I studied it for two years in college in the 1970's, and I got to put it to use with two visits to the USSR in 1989 and 1990. Unfortunately I've had little opportunity to keep it up. After more than 20 years I'm sure it's quite плохое.

I tried to learn a wee while back, its the alphabet that killed me.  Trying to teach myself Polish at the moment, which somehow manages to be as hard despite the fact that the alphabet thing is a lot less of a problem...

No, and at least I should learn the alphabet, since it is a mixture of the Roman one and the Greek one, which I know (took Greek for five years in high school). I know some simple stuff, learned it all in Israel while staying with Russians.
