(inspired by the recent discussions on semantics and cultural appropriation)

I'm actually, legitimately fond of them. Obviously they're very easy to make fun of, but that's not a problem to me. I'm catching myself starting to use "like" as a transition a couple times recently, so hopefully that means I'm beginning to appropriate that part of Californian identity! Cheesy

A monstrosity thankfully limited only to So-so Cal and the I-15 corridor up to Salt Lake.

Use "hella" as an adjective if you really want the appropriate Californian lingo.

Really? I read a while back it had spread everywhere in the country. I remember a few girls from San Francisco who talked like that too (though it was at a university, so for all I know they might have been from LA).

Yeah, probably from SoCal. NorCal speak would be "That's hella dank"

This was a thing in the very early 80s and that spread everywhere (well, everywhere white suburban middle class girls were, my sister and her friends were way into it...for like, two months)....are you guys saying this is still a thing?

I think so? At least, like as a transition is still very much a thing here. The other colloquialisms (totally, whatever, soooooooo, or something) might have fallen out of flavor a bit, but thankfully not completely! Smiley

Ugh, I'm really not a fan of that. Sad

What I love about Valleyspeak it that it sounds upbeat, heartfelt, and emotionally invested. Everything is like, soooo intense and important, you know? Vocal fry by contrast sounds awfully cynical and "self-aware".

It's not just everywhere in the US.  It's spread across the oceans.  Many young people in Australia seem to use a kind of Aussie version of valleyspeak, that's presumably a consequence of the popularity of American movies and TV here.

You're less of an Illinoisan than Hillary Clinton is a New Yorker although where you live has the same dialect.

The Fairly Odd parents character Veronica talks in the Valley Girl accent.
(Not surprising since the show is set in California, likely Southern CA)

Beautiful! Cheesy Not really a fan of the musical style, but it's worth it for the awesome lines.

Is "I'm so sure" a Valleyism too? Hadn't heard that one before.
