Specifically abortion isn't a good example: when the Soviet Union re-legalized abortion in 1955 (soon followed by most of it's Eastern European satellite states), it was ahead of most of the Western world, East Germany made abortion legal several years earlier than West Germany, and Cuba is one of only a few Latin American nations where abortion is entirely legal.

Liberalism is naturally centrist to slightly centre-right. It's very difficult for Democrats to be centre-left to left-wing and liberal.

In other countries, such as Australia, liberalism is centre-right. American liberalism is an exception to the rule.

Especially in the modern american context, I'll say yes.

Liberal increasingly means conforming to an ideology held by slightly left wing, suburban professionals. Its tenets -- technocratic gov't, gun control, etc (largely just the hotbutton, culture war issues) currently hold the Dem party captive, but aren't necessary to be a lefty.
