I'm starting to think we badly need more (non-bigoted, principled, articulate) socon Democrats to counteract the excesses of shallow "live-and-let-live-ism".

I agree 100%! We SoCon Democrats are certainly a minority in our party, but we can move the party in a better direction if we allow ourselves to be active and contributing members to the Democratic Party.

So all y'all Social Conservatives, New Democrats, Dixiecrats, Conservadems, Centrists, nitwits, halfwits and dimwits come and make yourself known in this thread!

To be clear, I'm certainly not a SoCon Democrat myself. My rare "socon" positions can be justified from a purely left-wing perspective, as necessary measures to combat the structural underpinnings of social, gender and racial inequality.

That said, considering the state of public discourse among the modern left, I definitely think your input would be helpful. Smiley

I was for a time until that position became truly untenable in the era of BLM and trigger warnings.

I actually like Jim Webb a lot, but he polled at 1% in the party for a reason.

I ended up concluding it's easier pushing the GOP to move to the center on economic issues than to pushing the Democrats to move to the center on social issues.

I ended up concluding it's easier pushing the GOP to move to the center on economic issues than to pushing the Democrats to move to the center on social issues.

The funny thing is that I'd say the same thing, but swapping "economic issues" with "social issues." Then again, as my avatar displays, I reject the "lesser of two evils" paradigm and prefer to support a movement that agrees with me across the board.

Speaking of which, you guys should make some kind of "Communitarian Party." I'd obviously never support it, but the more we can rob the duopoly of their absolute power the better!

Not a bad idea. But I feel that the term Populist would be a better indicator of our beliefs. Either that or "Paleoliberal". To emphasize our traditionalist view point.

I think Comunitarian would be the best term actually.

"Paleoliberal" sounds awful. Tongue

Paleoliberal is meant to imply separation from Neoliberalism. But you're right, it doesn't quite roll off the tongue so well.

I consider myself a Jacksonian populist who is socially conservative relative to the Dem mainstream. I don't really fit into the Dem tent anymore, but I'm reluctant to switch parties because the GOP has never stood for what I stand for. Trump is offering the closest to what I believe in, but I cannot support him. I would've voted for Buchanan, but Trump is another animal.

You're playing edition 32, version 7. It has three OP cards and every other card is basically useless.

I agree, my ideology is shifting to a Jacksonian populist vibe, with strong nationalism, with a sense of a strongly assimilated society.

Interesting. I would assume this would mostly be about abortion, euthanasia, and (maybe) drugs? Could you explain what social conservatism entails? I am by no means socially conservative, but I always like to hear other opinions.

Someone pointed out they were RELATIVELY conservative. So yeah, people who were really skeptical of conservatives who tried to wipe sex out in the 1990's...and now skeptical of liberal feminists who want to wipe sex out. People who were skeptical of firebrand preachers telling gays how to live their lives in the 1990's...and now skeptical of gays telling preachers how to live their life. Affirmative action often tends to be another base breaker issue. I wouldn't call myself conservative on many social issues, but I would definitely be wildly outside the Democrat norm on almost every single one.

This thread is so 2007-Atlas feeling. All it needs is someone raving about how strongly they favor civil unions but regardless believe marriage is only between one man and one woman.
