The Greatest Time in American History

The flames are bright. In the year 1896, America was still rebuilding from the Civil War, both physically and emotionally. The country was divided, yet again. Could it be healed? Only time could tell.... Let's look back at history... it all began in 1896....

The Dawn of the Century (1897-1913)Sad

It was the turn of the century, in 1896, America was in a deep recession and made a somewhat "radical decision". It elected Former Representative William Jennings Bryan in a landslide, to be president. Though Lincoln was the sort of favorite to win, he didn't. He wasn't dead yet, though. William Jennings Bryan carried out is campaign platform while in the White House, implementing the free coinage of silver. For the first few years, it absolutely wrecked the American hierarchy, it was in a state of panic. Farmers and the South loved him, though. In 1900, It was Election Time again...

President Bryan won re-election in a decisive and massive landslide, and pretty much continued his agenda in a second term. he also broke up the big banks, by the end of 1902, his approval rating was in the high-sixties. On December 21st, 1902, President Bryan delivered an address to a Burlington Union-Rally crowd. A crazed gunman, Leon Czolgosz, though very Pro-Bryan, wanted to impress an unknown lover who hated the President. This caused Czolgosz to shoot the president three times with an old revolver. The President died on Christmas Eve, 1902 from his wounds. Vice President Towne was sworn in almost immediately. He was really only a placeholder president, but brought the nation together after Bryan's death. He stated that he wouldn't run in 1904. The 1904 Primaries, of both parties were heavily contested. The legacy of the late President Bryan lived on for the Democrats, Hearst was nominated. The Republican legacy of the failed 1900 Nominee, Theodore Roosevelt lived on, causing Robert LaFollete, Sr. to be nominated. The Bryan system if free silver eventually collapsed in on itself on October 19th, 1904. This was a great recession, and due to anti-democratic and fear, LaFollete won in a landslide. Immediately after he was elected, the populist Democrats scrambled to protect their free silver policy, trying to pass a resolution to protect their policy, but it wouldn't pass. The newly inaugurated LaFollete promised a return to sound money, and he delivered a hard-line progressive approach to the matter. He would start a series of Isolationist policies, allowing the Philippines to be an independent nation, as well as pull all troops out of Cuba left over from President Cleveland. He also would start construction on a Panama Canal, the only thing that would keep Secretary of State William Taft onboard with his administration. It was 1908, Election Year. LaFollete's approval was mixed, what would happen?

The U.S Presidential Election of 1896:

Fmr. Rep. William Jennings Bryan/Governor Claude Matthews: 286 Electoral Votes 66.3%
Fmr. Sec. Robert Todd Lincoln/Fmr. Governor William McKinley: 161 Electoral Votes 33.1%
Fmr. Senator John Palmer/Fmr. Governor Simon Buckner: 0.5%

The Election was very interesting. Due to well, Lincoln being a Lincoln, the South voted violently against him, Bryan didn't even have to really visit the South much due to their likening of him. In the End, because of Lincoln's inability and unwillingness to actively campaign, he lost in a landslide, to Bryan. William Jennings Bryan visited every competitive state, in a very short time span. This was a re-aligning Election. Beware, rich bankers, Bryan is here!

The U.S Presidential Election of 1900:

President William J. Bryan/Fmr. Rep. Charles Morse: 364 Electoral Votes 68.2%
Mayor Theodore Roosevelt/Senator Henry Cabot Lodge: 83 Electoral Votes 31.8%

The Election of 1900 was interesting. President Bryan won re-election in a landslide, his agenda would stay after all. The landslide re-election of President Bryan would usher in a New American Era....

The U.S Presidential Election of 1904:

Governor Robert LaFollete, Sr./Senator Charles Fairbanks: 340 Electoral Votes 62.5%
Representative William Randolph Hearst/Senator Arthur Gorman: 136 Electoral Votes 37.5%

The U.S Presidential Election of 1904 was fiercely fought. It resulted in a massive LaFollete victory, due to Hearst's pro-Bryan free coinage policy, which had failed greatly. Despite Hearst's initial lead, a massive recession crashed the Stock Market in October 1904, resulting in little known progressive governor Robert LaFollete winning the Election, in a landslide. Welcome back, Sound money!

The U.S Presidential Election of 1908:

President Robert LaFollete, Sr./Vice President Charles Fairbanks: 404 Electoral Votes 68.8%
Representative Oscar Underwood/Senator Joseph Bailey: 79 Electoral Votes 31.3%

President LaFollete was popular, and also a terrific campaigner. Underwood felt comfortable only campaigning in the Deep South, which led to his demise. Also his public support for a new Ku Klux Klan contributed to his downfall. Sound Money was here to stay.

The U.S Presidential Election of 1912:
